What are you playing?

I’ve put my time in and I can say that Imperial Settlers Roll & Write is…just ok? As an app, it is perfectly functional and looks nice. There is a small progression system where you can unlock new civilizations, which are just variations on the standard score pad. The game itself, though, may be overly-involved for what it is. It is by no means complicated, but is also feels a bit fiddly with just a few too many options how to spend your dice, in my opinion. This is coupled with an incredibly obnoxious worker die that determines how many actions you actually get per round. Yes, there are ways to mitigate bad rolls, but the bottom line is that you could play a game where you get 30 actions or you could play a game where you get 50 actions, and that variance is really frustrating.

The most telling thing, though, is that I have an roll & wrote folder on my phone and I play Quixx and Noch Mal over this all the time. Sometimes a simple genre benefits from simple, quick games.

I’m glad I have the app. The game can be entertaining. But it is also forgettable, or at least it hasn’t got its hooks into me for what it is.

I was going to keep on trying to complete the main story quest in FF14, but was not getting into the final storyline at all in other dimension, so took a break.

I picked up No Man’s Sky a few weeks ago, and have been really enjoying it. It’s one of those games where I might play for an hour and a half after the kid has gone to bed, and I might not accomplish very much at all in that time, and still feel like I had a good gaming sessions. Just flying around the galaxy, seeing new alien flora and fauna, and taking it all. It’s chill.

Also on Steam sale right now at 50% off.

Lately, I’ve been playing more and more on Stadia. I finished Doom Eternal on the platform, Borderlands 3 (which was a gift because I refuse to give gearbox or 2k any money if I can avoid it) Destiny 2, Division 2 and now I’m diving into Elder Scrolls Online. I’ve played most of the free Pro games that have come out (other than Farming Simulator 2019 because I know how addictive that game is). I’ve bought 5 games on the platform, and it’s been well worth it.

So far, the tech has been rock solid 4K/60fps (when the developer enables it) and whatever it ends up at for others. It has its drawbacks, but it really does fit into my game time.

Outside of that, Fell Seal on Switch had my attention for a while. I finished most of the Metroidvania’s I bought on Switch (including a full run on Hollow Knight). If Billions Road had multiplayer on Switch I’d buy it there.

Crying Suns the last couple of days, and Civ6 + Yomi on iOS (amongst other minor games)

No Man Sky is such a good time-waster…but you always feel you have accomplished something with your time spent. Yesterday was 2 hours of afk crafting…5000 Nanites…nice haul

Such a great game. Such a shame the Launch was a debacle.

Still playing World of Warcraft. Up to 800 pets. Help me.

I took a break from WoW last Fall. Will pick it back up when the expansion comes out later this year.

Have you played Subnautica? I absolutely love it and have heard the current iteration of No Man’s Sky compared to it.

Finally finished my first run-through on Fire Emblem Three Houses. I played the Black Eagle line, which is reputed to be the most intense, and it was fantastic. All of the stellar reviews/praise this has received is accurate.

Deciding whether to play through again as a different house with the DLC or move on to something else.

@athros how was Fell Seal on Switch? I think it’s on sale at the moment, and it’s one I’ve been eying for a while due to reviews that compare it to Final Fantasy Tactics.

I don’t remember what happened when Three Houses came out to distract me, but I bought it on release and never got around to playing it (it may have been FFXIV). I just started playing from scratch about a week ago and am loving it.

I played the black eagle house, and somehow stumbled into the “unusual” ending - which totally aligned to my feelings towards that church.

Started a second play through with the Blue guys, but didn’t get past the school yet.

Another DreamQuest/StS type game: Monster Train. It’s like a cross between a deck-builder and Tower Defense. It works so well, that I don’t even know where my weekend went to.

I did not. I think I only read the name once or twice…need to check it out a bit…

Has anyone played The Witness? I’m just looking to see if it lives up to the hype.

As a puzzle game, it’s superb; as a walking simulator, it’s quite pretty; as a vehicle for pseudo-philosophical waffling, it’s pretty tedious. I enjoyed it, but I’d have enjoyed it more if I’d skipped the audiologs and video clips and just stuck to the (very challenging, very fair, very satisfying) puzzles.

Since the early days of the App Store, and exemplified by vanilla Angry Birds, the promise of mobile game has always been unique games that take advantage of the portability and of the touch screen on mobile devices. Unfortunately I feel that that quickly devolved into a cesspool of timers and non-games. Every once in a while, though, a game rolls around that shows off what mobile gaming can be. Even though it was originally a PC game, I feel liked One Finger Death Punch 2 is such a game, and I am enjoying it quite a lot. I don’t often buy “arcade” games, but this one won me over with its visuals and I can’t get enough. Great game!

Initially I just picked up 2 games during the Steam Summer Sale, Monster Train (which I love and am looking forward to additional content this week) and The Witcher 3. Now that I have a 2TB external SSD with Bootcamp on it, it really opens up my game options on my Mac, and really have always wanted to play Witcher 3. And 3 hours in, it bored me to death.

Fortunately, some of you in the Switch thread mentioned Borderlands 3, so I picked that up for PC and wow, am I addicted. I just got off the first planet last night, and am having a lot of fun. That is not even my style of game, but for some reason it is hitting just right for me.

Heh, I kinda liked Borderlands 2, but the Pre-Sequel bored me and I really enjoyed Witcher 3. Was going to pass on Bl3 but might give it a go now.

Went all in on WH40K during the sales…Mechanicus, Sanctus Reach, Gladius and Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2. Should keep me occupied through the next lockdown and/or winter.

I hear Gladius and it makes me think about that classic SRPG from the OG Xbox. Consoles were not great for that genre back then, so it really stood out.

Are you talking about the game married Final Fantasy Tactics with Roman gladiatorial combat? There was a time when I would buy any SRPG I could get my hands on and I did own that, though I only vaguely remember it.
