What are you playing?

The Steam version has a number of reviews.

So far I’m enjoying it. The aesthetics are neat but the card-based visuals do make some UI navigation a little lame. The game plays like and old JRPG. I’m not very far in to it yet.

Am I a bad gamer if I can’t get into the Persona series, 5 specifically? I think I played half of 3, less than that of 4, and I’m still in the first dungeon in 5. On paper I should love these games but they end up feeling like work, which is strange because I can grind ad nauseum in PokĆ©mon. I think I’m about to give up on the series. I’ve had the same experience with Disgaea.

How dare you.

Are they stressing you out?

I don’t know exactly what it is. There are two things that maybe stand out. Excuse the Pokemin comparisons, but for me, Pokemon is like a glorious spreadsheet that I can work on and manipulate to my heart’s content. Personas do not work like that and Persona collecting feels at both times more limited and more random. The game also gives me the feeling of having too much to do with too little time to do it. I know that is intentional, but it does get a little stressful.

This is totally the issue for me. Like you, I’ve tried them over the years because they just sound so much like games I should like, but I just don’t enjoy them.

As far as Pokemon for me, I like certain things about the games, but I dislike all the backtracking to fulfill some quest thing. For one, I get lost too easily, and for two it just too often feels like I’m not moving forward enough to the ā€œgoodā€ stuff. That said…what’s the best one on switch ATM, would you say?

That’s a tough question. Scarlet/Violet is tough around the edges but pushes the franchise in a great new direction with a huge open world map and a ton to discover.

I think Sword/Shield might be my favorite of you include the expansions. It is more traditional but does have a couple large open world areas so you get a little of everything.

Diamon/Pearl is fine if you can stomach the chibi graphics. It’s a fairly standard traditional Pokemon, but that isn’t a bad thing. It also has nothing new so if you remember you original experience in the games it may not be as exciting.

The Lets Go! series isn’t special and fees limited. I haven’t played Arceus Legends but I’ve seen it in action and it looks fun.

But was great as one of the first introductions to Pokemon and gaming in general on the Switch for my daughter at the beginning of the pandemic when she was 8 years old.

I enjoyed both swords/shield and scarlet/violet.

S/V was more challenging I think…

Feel the same as you - have never been able to get past the ā€œwhich bit do I do first?ā€

True. Great intro for kids. But I wouldn’t want to play through it again.

My kids love Sword. One daughter is in the endgame of her second playthrough and the other just started her second one. Diamond was not a hit. One never even tried it and the other gave up on it halfway through. Pondering Scarlet as the next. Heard it was the better of the two for that set.

I can comment more on Voice of Cards now.

Basically, it is a very basic RPG akin to the first Final Fantasy with a unique aesthetic of everything being cards. But that is merely the aesthetic - it plays exactly like an old RPG. Each character can bring 4 cards into battle and you can pick any of them each turn (provided you have the resources), so it amounts to the same thing as having an attack a three spells.

The story is basic but is narrated by a narrator. His voice is a bit dry but it gives the game the feel of a D&D campaign. There are some numerous moments and some goofy characters. There aren’t many secrets to discover nor is the list of items and weapons all that big.

Overall, it is a fairly small game. I enjoyed it and I especially liked that it gave me a game where I could make sure to explore every corner of the map and find every item in the list. The asking price seems a bit high but I suppose you are paying the SE tax. There are two more games in the series and I’ve read that they get progressively better so I can see myself picking them up sometime on sale.

TLDR: Enjoy she simplicity of the first FF or DQ? You’ll like this. Looking for either a card game or FFVI? This isn’t the game you’re looking for.

Edit: There are also no achievements on iOS (but there are on Steam). I like achievements in my RPGs. There is also no Cloud save that I can see. That’s always a shame.

It’s still good deep into the mid game. I have still yet to even see all the classes available. I also have stated recruiting monsters and they have their own class system that is deeper than for most human characters in SRPGs. Fell Seal is the goods. A bit rough around the edges, but definitely one of the best games I have played in years, and likely my new second-favorite ā€˜true’ SRPG (regarding Into the Breach as more of a hybrid game with a lot of roguelite and puzzle elements).

Thanks for the suggestion on Fell Seal! It went on sale on Switch last week, and I picked it up and have been really enjoying it. It really does have that FFT feel and comes pretty close to the depth as well. I’m only about ten battles in, but I really like it. Did you buy the DLC? Just wondering if it adds anything much to the game.

Fell Seal is on sale on PlayStation, too. FFXIV has its hooks in me for the moment but I think I’ll grab Fell Seal since it sounds right up my alley.

I don’t know what it is like without it. My Switch version appears to have it from the jump, since I saw a walkthrough mention hunts were in the DLC and I already went on a couple. What all does it say the DLC covers?

It looks like the DLC adds a few classes and focuses on hunting, so you must have gotten it as a package. Fortunately, the DLC is also on sale, so I’ll be getting that as well it would appear

Hunting is a very minor part so far. Had two of them, just small party battles against 1-2 super tough critters and possibly their helpers. Winning gets alternate looks for those monsters if you have any on your team, which is not a big deal.

Although I just looked not up and apparently monsters are not recruitable without this DLC? And the missions weren’t there either? So definitely get this.
