I’m in but I have no suggestions for new games
Spent a little time on the weekend exploring the “10 Categories” idea I pitched a while back. Happy to have this hacked apart or totally shot down since I just enjoyed the process.
The idea would be to vote in each category to pick one game in each to form the 10 games of the Decathlon.
Worker Placement
- Lords of Waterdeep
- Viticulture
- Agricola
- Raiders of the North Sea
Cards
- Star Realms
- Ascension
- Race for the Galaxy
- Epic
Tile Placement
- Carcassonne
- Patchwork
- Steam
- Galaxy Trucker
- Indian Summer
- Gem Rush
Territory Building
- Scythe
- Castles of Burgundy
- Tigris & Euphrates
- Isle of Skye
- Yellow & Yangtze
- Eight Minute Empire
Economic
- Brass
- Terraforming Mars
- Istanbul
- Stockpile
Heavy Weight (BGG Weight 3.5+)
- Through the Ages
- Terra Mystica
- Twilight Struggle
- Titan
App Store Top Ranked
- Ticket to Ride
- Love Letter
- Small World
BGG Top Ranked
- Puerto Rico
- Root
- Le Havre
Best since last Decathlon
- Roll for the Galaxy
- Dragon Castle
- Evolution
- Fort Sumter
- Sagrada
Classic
- Takenoko
- Tsuro
- Tikal
- Potion Explosion
Couple of titles I would like to add to this great list:
Potion Explosion, Indian Summer, Sagrada, Lords of Waterdeep
Added as best I could match the categories!
(Waterdeep was first in the list but not fully spelled out. LOL)
Titles that should probably be removed from the list as they are not asynchronous (or they are broken in some other way):
7 Wonders
Splendor
Caylus (Gone from App Store)
Catan
Love Letter
Puerto Rico
Eclipse (Broken, I believe)
Tokaido
Games that could possibly be added:
Fort Sumter
Epic
Titan
Gem Rush
Stockpile
Eight Minute Empire
Oof. I knew there were some that might be like that but didn’t realize it was that bad! (What’s wrong with my beloved Puerto Rico?!)
Anyway, thanks for that, @Mirefox!
I’ll work on the list later tonight.
Take 2
Eliminated 2 player only games
Removed some games with poor online play
Evened out the categories a bit
This also leaves room for 1 “people’s choice” category where we can have a run off vote for the top picks that didn’t make it in on the first vote.

- Roll For It!
Classic

- Galaxy Trucker
Excellent list.
I’d also take out Small World unless the MP setup has improved since we last played.
Two-player games maybe should go back in? Not only should we include Fort Sumter and Sagrada (edit: I see Sagrada is in Dice, and yes, it’s not just 2P), which are excellent, but classics like Star Realms, Patchwork, Star Realms and Star Realms.
Not Twilight Struggle though, as it takes forever.
I’d also not include Root - I like it, but its peculiarities would make it a bastard to learn just for one or two games.
Yeah, 2 Player Games should be back in, as Star Realms and Patchwork are standards for these. You just play both players in your pod in those.
Fair point on Root! I also took out Titan since I’ve heard it’s crazy long to play async.
I put the rest back in although Tile Placement has an extra entry compared to the rest now.
This is awesome! Thanks for doing all the legwork.
My suggestions:
-
I don’t think that Scythe async is that great. It works if everyone is committed.
-
I support bringing 2p back in so we can all vote for star realms
maybe swap out the new since last descargaron category and out those games into other categories. It seems fine if they are uneven
in fact it has been improved/fixed.
I think we’re in good shape now. I’ll post some polls later today and then we can do one last poll for the people’s choice category and catch any stragglers.
I’m curious how many people are playing Epic Card Game–I feel like Root has a better player base on Stately Play than that game. I bounced off it pretty hard, personally. I understand the concern with Root, and Epic probably gets voted out if nobody’s playing it, but I’d rather have Root as an option. Just one man’s opinion.
I only suggested Epic because I saw it in my games and know it is asynchronous, and something different. I don’t think I’ve played it enough to have much of an opinion.
I’m just trying to suggest games. Little off the beaten path.
I liked Epic when we played it; @whovian223 and I had a steady game going for a bit - not sure why we let it lapse tbh.
Me neither. It was fun.
I’d definitely vote for it for the Decathlon.
I’m up for some of it in preparation, could def use a refresher - I’ll send an invite?
Sure thing!
