Wow, lots of work done with this⦠They says it is easier to destroy than create, so let me add a few commentsā¦
The categories arenāt really best at reflecting the games within them. Isle of Skye is more of a āTile Placementā game than āTerritory Buildingā, and arguably the best āTerritory Buildingā game in the survey is in a different category (Terra Mystica). I feel the list suffers without a āCard Gameā category, especially when the āClassicā category has two games Iāve never heard of anyone playing in these forums (no offense to the early Codito games title!).
I feel like weāre be less likely to lose solid games to arbitrary categorization if we voted on the top 5 of games in previous decathlons, and 5 games that havenāt made the decathlon before.
Voted and in.
Valid points all. I will admit I mostly tried to balance the categories rather than decide the best category for each game. [Edit: for the record, once a category was āfullā I still tried to use BGG classification to assign a category.]
But note that the plan is to ensure one more game makes it in from the ālate entryā / second choice category.
Also, these are almost all really great games so I think we will be fine no matter what (and some great games will definitely not make the list when going from almost 40 down to 10.)
Letās see how the list pans out and go from there.
Voted and in. Thanks for organizing.
Voted and inā¦
I am torn and think @Hardco also has a point, but also donāt think this system is a bad one that you put together. What I recommend is the following:
Take the top 2 in each category, and then put them into a single list and we can vote again based on that list of 18 games.
Itās like a Swiss into Knockout competition.
Might I suggest leaving game 10 as a flex game. The decathlon went quite a long time last time around and a number of good games were released that would have been great for it. We know that games like Wingspan, Concordia, and Gaia Project will likely be out during the run of this coming decathlon and it would be nice to have the ability to put one of the good new games into the rotation.
This is just one of many reasons why I love this community! Great ideas and great collaboration!
I was thinking about the Swiss system too (in relation to my goal to have a runner-up game in slot 10 anyway) so letās do that.
And Iām fine either way on the #10 game being flex - Iāll leave that part up to @Hardco ( )
I love all the games.
Maybe we should set up a do-decathalon and just do all the games? Call it the decade - do-decathalonā¦
LOL on the do-decathlon - except it would take us until 2030 to finish!
always playing two parallel games wouldnāt make it longer.
weāre doing this nearly all the time, right?
Well, personally I always enjoy seeing how these polls play outā¦
The tie between two classic Playdek titles for Worker Placement is fun to see, as is the dominance of Terraforming Mars and Through the Ages. And clearly a few folks havenāt even played the games in the āNewā category. None of that is too surprising, but fun for us data geeks.
It looks like everyone who has said they are in for the next decathlon has voted, but letās give it a couple more days.
I also think itās worth doing a poll on format - do people like the categories idea or just want to play the top 10 games regardless?
- 10 Categories
- Top 10 games
- Donāt care

For the categories where I did not know any of the games, I looked them up in the App Store, and picked the ones that cost the least
I checked the App Store and picked the ones that looked the least intimidating.
LOL well that poll was extremely clear, at least!
Top 10 games it is!
Ok, we havenāt had any more votes in the categories for several days. Moving on to final game selection!
Here are all the games that had 50% or more of the vote in their category, or were 2nd place in their category. We will pick a top 9 and then vote again before the 9th game starts to determine the last game in the decathlon to allow for new releases and possible oversight or changing opinions.

We shooting for a Jan 1 start? Because I donāt know how everyone else here thinks, but being fellow gamers I have to imagine there are a fair number of you that see that as a perfect date
Ok, the top 6 are clear:
Star Realms
Through the Ages
Carcassonne
Agricola
Lords of Waterdeep
Sagrada
A great start!
But of course we have a 6 way tie for the last 3 spots. No matter how much I learn about group voting, itās just hard to avoid this kind of thing.
One more poll!
