This might be a little outside of our “stately” purview but I noticed that Honkai Star Rail just released and I was curious if anyone has had any experience with the developer or the game? It is interesting that the game will also be available on consoles and it is undeniably good looking but I worry that it is the same gatcha crap that is in every other of the thousands of hero collectors out there, but with a prettier coat of paint. I never played Genshin Impact, either, for the same concerns. I think this game is by the same developer.

The hero collection / gatcha stuff in Star Rail and their previous MMO is really secondary IMO. You’re not going to end up blocked out of 90% of the content in the game if you don’t pull a 5* in your first go. Elemental aspect and synergy with your other teammates are worth more than the higher stats of a 5* character generally.

I liked the previous game, never invested a penny, and got a good 40 or so hours of enjoyment out of it.
Far more interested in this one since the combat is turn based instead of real time and sounds like it’ll have more of a linear JRPG feel than an open world MMO like Genshin Impact.

I had wifi on the plane today and got some time in the game, so far it is fun. A lot of systems, and I worry that I might be hamstringing myself for the future, but for now, I think it seemed cool.

Wartales is out of early access on Steam.
it’s like Battle Bros “with legs”.
seriously the map and battle screens are much more beautiful.
the same level of punishment though?

Looks intriguing. Unfortunately no chance of me running that on my wife’s notebook. Can only hope given its by Shiro games that like Northgard there might eventually be an IOS ported version? Battle Bros also on sale at 67% off on a Steam daily deal - 12 hours left to run as of 1500 AEST.

Alrighty - I have bitten.

I couldnt do Battle Bros - but for this group, I will bash my head against Wartales

Boo, Windows only…

Alrighty, grabbed it and playing this morning on novice to get a feel for systems.

So far combat makes sense, professions make aense (just figured out you can respec professions).

Not sure I get food yet, but I think I need a cook

So, been playing on novice to get my head around it, but I can see this being tough at normal or higher.

That said, I just captured a bear to join my crew. Normal person has 20hp, bear has 150hp.

Downside is you can’t control the animals, they auto move / attack. So the bear joins my boar and mole rat (don’t ask)

Age of Wonders 4 is out.
on the Paradox Interactive website:
“Age of Wonders 4 multiplayer is versatile and replayable, supporting both live and asynchronous games.”
on PC, XBox Series X/S. PS 5.
i’m hoping for crossplatform play.

I’m hoping for a physical console release. I don’t see one yet but maybe because it’s such a low key game…

i don’t think it’s low key.
eagerly awaited by strategy players.
a great AoW community.
what i have seen so far very high production value.
many streamers are playing it right now on Twitch.

vibes of Heroes of Might and Magic, CIV and XCom.

I just mean that I haven’t seen much press about it. I adore the series and would probably die a happy man if Shadow Magic somehow made it to iOS. But there is a library of games I’d love to see on iOS, and the fact that Civ VI exists on my phone makes me wonder why some many classic games haven’t been brought over. Alpha Centari, anyone? But I digress; my dreams are probably not a cost efficient exercise for the people who can actually get it done.

I haven’t had much luck with the AoW universe, try as I might.
I start games of AoW3 and Planetfall, wander a bit, fight a bit, and then log off.
I’m sure it’s me, not them.

in the very end i was heavily disappointed by CIV 6 on my iPad:
the downgraded graphics (no retina HD) are a shame and hurt so much.
always UI problems with pop-up help and info windows.
and our 6P multiplayer online game was busted after about 100 turns because of “corrupted data”.
later another cross-platform MP game crashed too.

i had a lifelong dream of playing CIV online async but now have lost my faith that a CIV 6 game can be played to the finish. too many bugs, too many server problems and bad support have crashed my games and my dreams.

i regret to have spent all the money for all expansions.
i won’t touch it again.

so when i see the title of a very positive streamer review “a dream comes true: Fantasy goes CIV and XCom” of AoW 4 and read about async online MP a new hope is rising for me at last.

Paperback Vol. 2 is currently free on iOS if you’re looking for a deckbuilding word game…
