Looks like puzzle quest 3 might be out on android as an “early access”. Not sure what you get in the early access

I think that’s a slight overreaction. The app is not that bad at all, and more or less in line with competitors. Sure it could be a little better. Sure WoTC might have had more money to throw at it perhaps, but as is right now, it’s definitely fit for its purpose, and who knows, they may just support it this time with good updates, unlike most of the previous attempts on mobile.

The “bling” just needs to be enough to make it viewable on your favorite streaming service. Compare MtGA to Magic Online, and it’s a huge improvement. What will keep people playing is the gameplay, which they’ve done a reasonable job of designing over the past several years.

The fact that each land card looks like a quarter-inch-thick Bakelite tile is very of putting me for a completely inexplicable reason.

It’s the mandatory tutorial for me. As if I’ve not been playing magic for 25 years at this point

Y’all sure are giving me “maybe try it after six months of updates” vibes.

It’s still Magic, so niggles aside, the game itself is fantastic.

I’m not sure which majority you mean by y’all. I’m certainly saying it’s good enough. It’s got enough sparkle for me.
Go play and enjoy!

I’ve been really enjoying Magic Arena - the new player experience is a bit slow if you’ve played before, but it just brings home how much better Magic is than all the other CCGs (imho)

I’m enjoying Magic Arena, though maybe I’m clouded by not having played in a while. It should have been made clearer that you can unlock all play modes though. As I don’t think I could handle all of the color challenges.

Once I unlocked them, I was a bit put off by the pricing structure though. If you only want to draft, the lack of secondary market for the cards makes it pretty unreasonable. Winning packs has no value, since they can’t be used as part of the entrance fee for your next draft.

I’ve spent $20 on the Mastery Pass for each set release (which is 4 a year) and I’ve been able to draft consistently on just that investment. Maybe that’s more than you’re looking to spend, but I’m easily getting that much value out of playing every day.

The draft also returns gems. 6 wins in a quick draft will kick back enough to start another draft. 3 wins will kick back about half of what you need to start another draft. 5000 gold will also start another quick draft, which is about 4 days worth of daily rewards. I’m also rare drafting until I have a complete set, which usually take about 2 weeks of drafting for me (and they don’t allow quick draft until 2 weeks after a set release). But $20 to have every rare card in the set and about half of the mythics within a month after release seems like a pretty good deal to me.

I missed the fact that the drafts provide gems as part of the reward. I’m looking at the screen for “Traditional Draft Kaldheim”, and it says the reward for 3 wins is 6 packs and 3000 gems. It also says the cost to draft is 1500 gems, so doesn’t that cover the cost of 2 drafts? How is a traditional draft different from the quick draft?

The point may be moot though, as I’m not sure I can find the time to sit down for 2-3 hours of drafting…

Edit: I think I get it to some degree… Quick drafts are like Heartstone where we draft against AI and can play our matches at our leisure until we lose three times. Do all of the traditional and premier drafts require us to commit until the end of 3-7 rounds?

Quick Draft is against AI. It was the only draft available in the original release. You can quit at any time and come back to the draft later to finish. You can also play games at your own pace. Quick Draft is best of one, so usually 10 minutes per game or so. You play until 7 wins or 3 losses. Quick Draft event rotates which set it uses every 2 weeks, and you have to complete all of your games before that rotation (or you just get the prizes for how ever many games you won before the event closed). The AI draft tends to be a bit more predictable in which colors will be open, so I find it easier to rare draft and still end up with a deck that can get 3 or 4 wins.

Premier Draft and Traditional Draft are against humans. These are timed and you have to complete 3 rounds of drafting in one sitting to get your deck. Unfortunately, you usually end up with at least one really slow person at the table of 8. Probably someone who is streaming and explaining the details of every single pick they make. Once the draft is done, you can play matches at your own pace (you don’t play matches against the same people you drafted with, so hate drafting isn’t really a thing).

Premier Draft is best of one, and works like Quick Draft (up to 7 wins or 3 losses). Traditional Draft is best of three, and you will only play three matches before you are done.

Human drafts were added last summer, and I think most people prefer them, but I find Quick Draft is better for my goal (building a full set of rares for the set), so I only play a couple of Premier Drafts with each set while I am waiting for Quick Draft to be available.

Has anyone got redeem codes working for mtg:arena? Apparently we can’t redeem codes through the mobile client, but there is an option to on the website. That’s as far as I get, all the codes that should probably work then fail at that point.

And now that I’ve played more, I have to disagree with mirefox about the bling in the app. I think this is the best looking mtg game Ive played.

It may be the best MtG app, but I’m coming off Legends of Runeterra, which just runs much smoother and looks much better.

That’s a fair point. I don’t tend to play other ccg apps, so I don’t know what’s standard and expected in the genre these days

Yes I got all the codes to work via the website. You can actually end up with a ton of free packs if you type all the codes in.

Where are you guys getting said codes?

I got mine from here https://cardgamebase.com/mtg-arena-codes/ . I’ve got the mtg site to accept some of the codes now, but I’ve had nothing show up in my account

Edit: ah there they are. I played a game against a bot, then went to the store. I don’t know if it was that that triggered it, or if enough time passed. Regardless, I got some free stuff

League of Legends: Wild Rift is out now in the US. I haven’t tried it yet but as I love LoL, I’ll be digging my claws deep into this one. I expect it to be them best mobile MOBA by a long shot.
