@irishdomer08, @Mirefox, @geigerm - I’ve set up a total beginners’ game. SpiceTheCat’s game, password Sp2

I’ve got as far as watching a how to play video and reading the rules…

Count me in if anybody else is up for a beginner table of Root.

Same on Root for beginners; bought it but never played.

Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 Complete Edition is Free on the Epic Games Store

I could watch the little animal band jamming on the Root tile screen all day long!

@Mirefox - I think I’ve hit a bug in Scythe - I tried to engage you in combat, but after picking my card and power committed the game seems to have frozen and I can’t do anything, but my counter is still counting down.

What is the game showing you?

I did not get a notification but it was waiting for me to resolve combat. Unfortunately, I was not able to see where the combat was coming from, what units were involved, or what resources were at stake. It wouldn’t have made a difference but this kind of seem like important pieces of information…

Ha ha! So I guess we’ve found some flaws in the async implementation?!

And some major UI flaws, though there are others that concern me, too. Right now I can’t figure out how to view the player board so that I can actually see where my markers are.

Playing on phone, for what it is worth.

our 3P game of Evolution is running fine now and i got a better understanding of the game’s flow:

no replays for the food card play phase. of course! because there is nothing to show in this phase. the cardplays are secret, and each player always plays just one single card.

but there are replays in the main phases.
basically there is no auto-feeding. i always had the choices. maybe when a player has only one species? and then it would be a good thing for speeding up the gameplay, because that player has no choice anyway.
the log is well done.

so what do we have?
notifications which tell us for which game they are. yes, i’m staring at you, Terraforming Mars!
an async menu which shows who is up in which game. again i’m shooting lightning sabers of doom from my eyes at…TfM!
replays, tooltips, nice graphics and good gameplay.
i really like it!

ok, we had a freeze and an invitation failed.
i hope those issues will be ironed out soon.

I have yet to see a replay during the feeding phase so I presume it only happens when there is a decision to be made. I hope you are shown replays when you starve or are eaten…

It does stop the feeding phase when you have an ability where you have to make a decision, so that’s good.

I did see all the traits get played leading up to the feeding where I had to choose something too.

Edit: no notification of my turn, though

I’m getting banners but no badges; the banners get lost in the mix of notifications though

it helps to switch banner style from “temporary” to “persistent” in the iOS notification settings.

I’m currently playing a game of Scythe on my phone and it is really highlighting the importance of UI design juxtaposed against the elegance of well-designed board games. I own the cardboard version of Scythe and know how to play, yet I am staring at my iOS game as if I’ve never seen the game before. There is something about having so much information - from board state to player boards to card - laid out in front of you and easily accessible and readable that really makes a well-designed board game hard to replicate via digital menus, trays, icons, etc.

I agree 100% here. I tried a number of times to play Scythe on Steam. Every time I bounced before I finished a game.

We got it to the table and wow it clicked! I could see why it was such a great game.

Wingspan on digital is similar for me too. I have played that so many times 2 player with my wife, I find the app incredibly limiting of all the information I can collect by just glancing at the boards.

I did my review of the Wingspan app (thanks for the lead-in, @Baelnor!).

It’s a great app, with a few minor problems.

For you roll and write fans out there, the third version of That’s Pretty Clever is in the App Store. This one is called Clever Cubed.

I will admit that my wife and I were quite addicted to the first and had quite the high score competition going.

Squire for Hire is available on ios. I really don’t know much about it other than that it was a tabletop game first.

Apparently the board game edition of Game of Thrones is coming to Steam tomorrow.

I had not even heard this was a thing.

Developed by Dire Wolf but published by Asmodee.

I’m so torn on whether this is going to be any good or not based on that.

Of course, I know nothing about the game itself other than that there is a lot of backstabbing and negotiation, which I’m not sure translates well into the digital realm anyway unless you can get a full complement of players.
