What are you playing?

It is not the same people as Cultist Simulator, I will have to check it out though. My fav in that genre is Stacklands.

I am about 50 hours into this and up to Prestige 5. So much fun!!!

@Baelnor I have held off because it is early access, does that matter?

Good question. I think it is relatively there, but that 50+ hours means I am still only 3/4 of the way through an unlock mechanism.

Maybe worth holding off, but I have enjoyed the core game so much I couldbt

Just downloaded stacklands on PC for, like, $3.

Might take a while to get the hang of!

Can you sell ideas for no downside?

Yup, it is something that is not really clear, as they just clog your board, but yes sell them,

@Private_Prinny so…. Tell me… Switch has Disgaea 7 (!) coming out next year.

Is this the one to dive in on?

Assuming from your query that your preferred platform is the Switch and further assuming by the wording you haven’t played any Disgaea games before…the answer is…No.

From my (heavily biased) point of view, Disgaea 6 strayed too much to re-invent itself. It wasn’t all that well received, therefore. I am curious how they try to go on further from here in the series but I wouldn’t think it would be a good idea to wait until then.

But this is also from my viewpoint: ā€œlet’s start here and go back to the older games anyway later on.ā€
If you discard that option from the start and don’t care for the roots of the franchise it still might be a lousy jumping-in point since it moved away from the roots too much by then.
A quick research led to the following:

Currently available Disgaea games on the switch: D1 complete, D4 complete, D5 complete, and D6.
Further research on dekudeals aside from D6 every other game is frequently discounted to about ~20ish of your local unit of buying power.

With this in mind, I suggest either going for D4 or D1. By D4 they refined much of the early stumbling blocks of the franchise away while having the ā€œusualā€ new stuff toned down in importance.
I am strictly biased toward D1 but this is with my nostalgic muffler and stomach pouch put on.
Even I must admit, despite the facelift D1 got in recent years it still is largely a sign of its time.
The cast of the original was more to my liking but that is as said nostalgic bias speaking.

So if the focus is accessibility versus purity I have to say go D4/5 over D1. Disregard D6 and D7 for starters

Note that the second D2 is announced for the Switch the complete wall of text above is henceforth pointless. Because D2>all the rest :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

@Private_Prinny is clearly the expert here, but I’ll chime in, too. I remember back when SRPGs were a rarity and the only options I had were FFT and Tactics Ogre. The original Disgaea promised to give me everything my heart desired. But then it gave a bit too much. I like the idea of Disgaea but I personally think there are too many systems and too much bloat for them to be perfect games. Looking at them from that point of view, I tend to like the earlier Disgaea games better because they don’t try to pack is as much stuff as the latter, though they are still a little over-saturated with numbers for my preferences.

I agree with everything @Private_Prinny and @Mirefox both wrote on this. I am also not an expert on Disgaea, but I’ve played most of them at this point, and I also remember the days when FFT and Tactics Ogre were the only games like this. They were dark, dark days : )

For me, Disgaea 1 has always seemed the best. Although I have played less of 4 (and not for some time), so it may in fact be better at this point. I would agree too that all the games have some bloat to varying degrees, and it seems to get worse with the higher numbers. For some that will seem like ā€œmore game for my moneyā€ but for me it feels like too many things distracting me from the core game, which is all I care about.

I must also point out that Tactics Ogre has very recently been released for Switch, and it’s great : )

This cannot be highlighted enough!
Also, there are some ā€œlightweightā€ SRPGs on the Switch if you so desire.
Look up Mercenary’s Saga, Dark Deity, and Rise Eterna.

Also the ā€œPrinny Presents NIS Classicsā€ Collections for other games from the makers of Disgaea (same style/humor different gameplay/mechanics)

Yeah, I think I have played most of the Norma stuff, pretty sure I tried Disgaea on DS around the time it was peak srpg.

Anyways, kids have me in PokƩmon Scarlet now, and still have backlog of triangle strategy and octopath. Might challenge myself to wrap those three before moving on

Yeah, I’m in PokĆ©mon now, too. I’m probably one of the few who prefers the old quasi-linear style to the open world, but my play style was always to explore every nook and cranny and find (and breed) every PokĆ©mon possible. The open world works counter to my anal tendencies…

This is a family forum, we don’t want to hear about your anal tendencies
