What are you playing?

Is that the Axis & Allies made by Beamdog? I think they were working with a local university on the AI player for it. The game was originally developed using web technology (I think HTML5, but not certain), which probably explains the performance issues.

It’s got email notifications, doesn’t it?

And I agree about the instability. I ended up doing a power cycle before loading my turn to limit that problem.

Yes, it is the Beamdog app.

And yes, I believe it does have an option for e-mail notifications but I despise that, especially on a mobile device that has the ability to give app-specific notifications. Fortunately all the players are my close friends so we send texts to each other. I’m done looking to give developers excuses for not using technology that has been available for over a decade at this point.

You guys talked me into it, bought the three-app package for the developer for $9 and will see what all it has to offer.

Even though A&A is rough around the edges, to say the least, we are having fun. The three of us are currently playing as the Allies against the AI. Possibly the most fun part is all the texts we send to each other strategizing our game.

I was wondering, are there any other iOS games that let you team up online with asynchronous play? I know Starbase Orion allows it, though that’s been crashing on me lately. Can you play co-op in Civ VI?

Having a lot of fun on PUBG. I’m not very good as it’s been years since I had a PC capable of playing a modern shooter, but now I’m back and my terrible keyboard skills and cheap mouse form like Voltron with my rusty instincts to make me safely mid-grid every match. I’m still bitter I paid for the game three years ago on PS4 and now it’s gone F2P on PC, but I am having fun anyway and I’ve never found another shooter that gets the adrenaline going in quite the same way. Particularly enjoy the way after several hours of gaming, I have drunk enough beer to drop a horse, instinctively staying hydrated, and yet am feeling quite sober as long as the heart is pumping, and then in a lull or between matches I realise I am too refreshed to be playing decently. Oh well.

Have you played other battle royals games? I’m wondering how this compares to its peers like Warzone or Apex Legends.

Warzone is glossier and less finicky, but also has a smoothness that evens over skill differentials; I play it occasionally but it’s not as exciting as PUBG, there are known places you can reliably hit for X weapon and y loot. The whole game has a more ā€˜average’ approach that makes each play more adequate but robs it of real highs and lows.

Apex is a different game again, it reminds me more of arena shooters of 15-20 years ago where you’re relentlessly on the move as fast as you can go, and there’s no pretensions towards realism. Just playing it makes me feel slightly tired.

Both good games, but PUBG has a formula where you can drop in and your location might be full of weapons, ammo, and armour and healing items, or it might be full of bicycles, parachutes, and smoke grenades. You have some matches that are write-offs, you and five other people drop into the same location and they all have guns 0.1 seconds after hitting the ground and are all shooting the unarmed dickhead running for his life. The game forces you to use whatever you find, or die. Usually die. And it is explicitly survival focused, you gunfight to survive and gunshots draw attention from other players. It has really excellent sound design that you need to take advantage of to locate shooters, for instance, because you can’t spot someone sniping at you from 600 metres away. Some aspects of the game are not polished at all (vehicle physics), some parts of it are still shonky and it’s been out years, so there’s no excuse, but I love it anyway. I’ve had some incredible games where I’ve been up against some high level armoured beast of a player who is spitting a wall of lead at me from his fully specced-out assault rifle, and I’ve managed to out-guess him and stick my shotgun in his ear and go on to pick up ten more kills with his kit. Rarely, but still.

Is there any such thing as an X-Com-like squad tactics game with asynchronous multiplayer where each of your buddies can get one unit and you need to work together? I was thinking this would be fun with some of my good friends.

Probably not? Asynch games would take a long time in that case. Speaking personally I wouldn’t mind it, but if you have a team of 6, that’s 6 asynch turns for one game ā€˜round’ which could take hours. For an X-Com style game, with lots of battles, that’s a looooong time.

I suppose you’re right. I was thinking very specifically about a couple friends and. And strangely enough I haven’t found a developer yet that makes games specifically for us…

Gloomhaven on TTS for a substitute? Or does Gloomhaven on Steam have multiplayer?

It has multiplayer and apparently quite good. Haven’t tried though

Has anyone played Iron Harvest? I’m looking at it for my PS5, of all things, even though I know consoles aren’t the best systems for RTSs.

I am like 15 hours into Lost Ark, and just played a dungeon that was a total blast. It’s free to play, but I have not spent anything yet, and I am not sure what I would spend on. Similar to POE, I think it is mostly about spending on cosmetics, although I think there are some timer boosts you can buy for crafting and stuff.

I’ve played up to level 30 so far, but the game has brought me no joy. If my friends stick with it, I might try the free boost to level 50 to see if things get more interesting then, but I might just cut my losses.

I can’t play it in Singapore (without VPN of course)

I’ve been playing Tales of Vesperia on the Switch for quite some time now and holy cow, what a slog. I do like it and can see why it garnered so much acclaim back in the day but the pacing is a mess. Dialogue scenes are too frequent and too long and I feel like I’m just going in circles around the world, continually revisiting the same places.

I had a similar issue with Dragon Quest XI.

I’ve only been playing it ā€œon the sideā€ when I have time and in between other games, so that might add to how drawn out it has felt. Elden Ring comes out today so I won’t be making a lot of headway on Veaperia any time soon.
