so there are replays ā¦sometimes.
i could see Baelnor and Mirefox playing their cards, and then the autofeeding (which only happens when enough food for all creatures and no decisions to be made. a clever feature for speeding up the game).
So far only 2 games on Steam Sale this summer (although i am thinking about 2 more this week.)
First up is Griftlands. This is another take on the DreamQuest/SlayTheSpire deckbuilding game. This time the format has a little more story telling going on, and some decisions you make matter in that run. Also, you are building 2 decks in this game, a combat deck and a persuasion deck, and you have basically 2 different life meters for each deck, so you can often choose to fight or talk your way out of something, depending on the decks and your health/resolve.
Personally, while I appreciate some of the innovation they attempted, I find a lot of the long dialog chains to be uninteresting and just getting in the way. I would actually prefer a more straight forward StS type tree. While interesting the first run with each character, it just kind of gets boring after that.
Itās a good submission into the genre, but I think it pales in comparison to StS or Monster Train, and I think it has a lot to do with the pacing. After 10 hours of play, I have already won with 2 of the 3, and the idea of grinding up challenge levels to unlock more stuff (cards, perks, etc) seems more like a chore than anything else.
The other game I bought this weekend is Yakuza Like a Dragon - This is a turn-based combat JRPG set in modern Japan. I completed chapter 4 last night with about 10 hours of play and damn is this game fun. Itās a LOT of story telling, but this is a story that I am actually enjoying and looking forward to see where it is going. Combat is fun and entertaining, with lots of different skills, and they did a great job of capturing the feel of an action game while keeping it turn-based. This is my recommendation if you are looking for a Steam Sale pickup.
Also, always looking for more Steam friends, invite me on Steam @ kennfusion
Yeah, I noticed you playing Griftlands a fair bit. I occasionally come back to it, but it does get a bit rote after a while.
I bought the full game on steam for like $5, but check out the demo version of Shapez.io
Its an abstract āfactorioā type game that I canāt stop playing now.
@Baelnor and @Mirefox,
holy crab! what a mistap blunder in Evolution.
ony wanted to minimize the game but triggered the āEnd Turnā button instead.
a full hand of cards wasted
so iām done in the game, but will go on of course.
i wonder how this could happen? normally we must keep pressing down the End Turn button for some time till the bar has filled up.
but it happened instantly this time
wanted to reread some rules passagesā¦
should have gone back to main menu.
Oh no! Rack up a new game? Might as well play in parallel
Good news is, it works!
Yeah, strange that it was instantaneous.
If it makes you feel any better, Iāve more or less forgotten any bit of strategy whatsoever so even with a big blunder like that you both have me on my heels.
Iāve been playing a ton of SNKRX. The dev calls it an āauto-battler shooter rogueliteā ā¦ build a āsnakeā of different heroes, each of which falls into 1-3 classes with their own strengths, and try to make it through 25 (or more, if you continue your run with increased difficulty after beating the game) waves of enemy attacks. Really enjoy trying different buildsāalmost everything feels pretty cool regardless of how far I make it.
$2.99 on either Steam or mobile.
They may be nothing at all alike, but back in the day Nimblebit had a game where you build a snake of fantasy-style characters, each with their own abilities. It was a neat little twist on the classic game and it is a shame the game has long since disappeared. I may have to check this one out.
I feel this one got traction when the egg-man himself, Northernlion streamed it a few times 1-2momths back. He seeemed to really enjoy it so I got it on iOS, but couldnāt quite get in to it. I found the controls a bit jarring and imprecise. And felt I was just steering the snake in circles until the difficulty got higher which was a fair number of rounds in. (Hence didnāt really want to re-start).
Nimble Quest? The dev did mention that as one of his inspirations, along with Dota Underlords.
Yeah, Iāve read that Northernlionās streams helped get a lot of early visibility for the game.
I think the devās made a lot of updates in a short time. Took me a little while to get used to the controls, but Iām good now. My only issue is the occasional mis-tap in the store area. And while I can see your point about the simplicity of going in circles, Iāve found the early levels are important for learning the different types of enemies and figuring out the synergy between units so I can build around them as I go.
Iāve enjoyed the game a lot more than I thought I would, so I figured Iād throw it out there.
Yes, I had forgotten the name, but it was indeed Nimble Quest.
Has anyone played Creatures of Aether? It looks like the FF Triple Triad mini game. Iām just looking for anyoneās impressions.
Iām playing the Amazon MMO, New World. Other than the excellent eve echoes, itās been about 15 years since I played an mmo. Except for the graphics, the genre doesnāt seemed to have significantly evolved in the last decade and a half. Which is fine, because the recipe was pretty good to start with. It ticks all the boxes I was looking for. Harvest things, craft things, work with other players (or not), fight other players (or not).
I did find it notable how incredibly seriously some people take mmos, from my watching streams or taking part in guild events. For a game that has significant social elements, these people who take the game so so seriously just arenāt fun.
I keep trying to figure out what is it about MMOs that is enjoyable to me and I canāt put my finger on it. I am not particularly social so that isnāt it. But when I try to take a break from an MMO and replace it with a non-MMO-but-similar game, I usually bounce off those pretty hard.
I still need to get into Eve Echoes. It looks like something I would like but it has quite the learning curve and Iāve seen so many complaints about the in-game economy that Iām hesitant to put the time into learning it.
I played New World in the late Alpha, so decided to skip beta and wait for retail, but I also really enjoyed it. I have been fairly burned out on WoW and FF14 recently so it is a welcome change. Looking forward to it when it is live.
Weāve got some Metroidvania fans here, so even though this is a bit outside the siteās purview, has anyone here played Severed? Itās only $1 on iOS currently and Iāve never been all that interested until nowā¦
I figured Iād give it a try for $1, but it if you are looking for a metroidvania, this doesnāt really have that feel. Navigating the world is reminiscent of Might and Magic, and combat involves slashing the screen in specific directions depending on where enemies are blocking.
That being said, I still put in almost an hour into the game in one sitting, and I will consider going back into it.
