What are you playing?

Yeah… like a lot of these systems the progression makes the game easier, so that unfolds more slowly.

I did beat standard on my third run, so I expect some of the advantages unlocked might be important in the hardest levels

No energy, play as much as you like

And that is a problem how exactly?

We’ll be the only ones to buy it in that case!

THAT…is a sound argument…unfortunately :pensive:

So … it’s a Dicey Dungeons ripoff?

I downloaded it earlier to mess around with on the subway and it is a take on Dicey Dungeons, but they brought an interesting take on it, which I appreciated it.

Ok, I need someone to talk me off the ledge. I am going out of town a couple time over the next two months so I’ve decided to cancel my Final Fantasy XIV subscription for as few months. I’m end game with half the jobs and while I love the game, I don’t feel the need to subscribe just to play sporadically. Anyways, for some reason my brain is telling me to get into another MMORPG, but with no subscription. Maybe Guild Wars 2, maybe Elder Scrolls Online, or maybe one of the other free ones on my PS4 like Neverwinter or Destiny 2.

But why?!?! Socializing aside, which I don’t do much of anyways, what does an MMORPG offer over an immersive RPG? Shouldn’t I be looking at Mass Effect? Or any other BioWare, Bethesda, or Obsidian games? I can get as much exploration in those, right? And loot that is actually meaningful, not just a mechanic to fuel yet another gameplay loop/grind?

Assuming I don’t care about socializing, I should be looking for a real RPG, right?

Since I am a massive fan of Guild Wars 2 and Mass Effect this is tough for me. But as time has proven time again, I cannot play more than one MMO with that many hobbies I have. So since you are an FF14 fan, I advise against Guild Wars 2 (can’t believe I write this) but only because you will eventually go back to FF14 when Endwalker comes out.
The time between is better spent with a palate cleanser, and I have cleared the Mass Effect trilogy a mere 3 times before the Remaster Legendary Edition came out not like some other crazy dude who has gone through it 34 times already, so I can vouch for replayability at least. Also Science-Fiction and a great Soundtrack.

Stay away from the other “free” MMOs. There is no free lunch after all.
Aside from GW2, they are way to “not free” with all their bizarre money-making shenanigans. Arenanet was one of the first (the first mainstream studio at least) to shun the subscription model as a mechanic, and since then SOME F2P crap has crept its way into there as well over the past decade but overall it has the most “ethical” free to play moneymaking scheme I know out there.

Now I have to go urgently looking for a corner to cry in and rip my hair out for advising someone against playing Guild Wars 2…

I may have mis-worded that a little, so don’t fret. I played Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 quite a lot, so it would be a return to GW2, not an initiation. I’m just questioning go why I’d want to go down that rabbit hole again as opposed to becoming immersed in a “true” non-MMO RPG.

Real RPG all the way! I find it difficult (impossible) to maintain the kind of pace/attention that MMOs require. And there are so many excellent RPGs that I can enjoy at my own pace, if I see a title is an MMO, I don’t even bother looking at it. TBH, I never actually enjoyed the social aspect of MMOs anyway.

Of course, I’m the same person who replays Baldur’s Gate with new/different mods every few years or so–my opinion may not be the most valid…

It’s interesting, as I am the opposite. I have started Divinity OS II like 4 times. I just checked Steam, I have 47 hours played. But then I lose interest and when I go back to it 9 months later, I decide to start over again.

Whereas I can log back into FF14 or WoW anytime after not playing for even a year and just pick right back up with no problem.

I would suggest that’s the nature of the sub-genres. When I get back into an MMORPG after time away, it is really easy to understand talking to the guy with an (!) icon then killing the 10 things he needs killed. When you get back in to a deep RPG after significant time away, you’ve forgotten where you are in the story, how your characters are built, etc.

Try something like Disco Elysium if you want a break.

I drift in and out of WoW, enjoying it, but falling in to old habits where I spend more time on an AH than playing, and can’t face a dungeon again. Which means I then drift into AH or trying out gold farming spots, which generally ends in tears.

That said, when I play an MMO, especially WoW, I write down my goals; get renown 40 / complete lore master / collect 1000 pets.

That way I play towards something and consciously change goals later rather than just aimlessly wander around

Has anyone tried Evolution asynchronous lately? It had had its share of bugs when the feature released but I’d love to know if it has been cleaned up at all.

I’d also be willing to be the guinea pig to check it out again if anyone else wants in.

good idea! i’m in.

I will go too - Baelnor

Game created, invited you both and game is underway

I did get a notification for the invite and took my first turn. So far so good, I guess.

Evolution seems to be running fairly well so far. Notifications have been consistent for me, though I wish there were icon badges. My biggest issue right now is that there don’t seem to be turn replays and I can’t find a turn log. Is there one? I hate when the game state changes in a game and you either don’t know why or aren’t aware of the change.
