I played Trials of Fire a lot over the weekend. Picked it up on 50% sale.

This is my new favorite take on the deck building game. Itā€™s StS with tactical battles and really works well.

I went back and wrapped up XCOM Chimera Squad which was a great game. Very under rated.

And on Switch I picked up Final Fantasy X / X2 remaster. Such a beautiful game, I canā€™t wait to play it through the whole way this tine

Iā€™m going to guess at Dyson Sphere Program, @Private_Prinny? Iā€™ve been strictly rationing my time spent on that, since I know (after Factorio and Satisfactory) just how much of a timesink that genre can be.

Giving it a bash now. Very Final Fantasy Tactics, and Iā€™m not as much of a fan as I once was of that. Battles are too set-piece, enemies donā€™t attack until an arbitrary point, etc. Like, if there are five enemy archers, donā€™t have them wait six turns so the player can get next to them, design the battle differently. Improve the design of the AI so the fights arenā€™t relying purely on reinforcements teleporting in. Same with your units. Why can that guy flying on a fucking giant hawk only move one square more than anyone else? Itā€™s like this all the way through the design.

I have dabbled a bit in Factorio but after the Tutorial Missions were done I wasnā€™t too keen on continuing. I was fine with the concept but I didnā€™t like that combat was included. Reminded me too much of Terraria and Minecraft (which I both hate with a passion).

Also usually I really like sprite graphicsā€¦but this time aroundā€¦Factorioā€™s style wasnā€™t grabbing me at all.
In comes Dyson Sphere Programm. The premise is that humanity as a whole has plugged itself into the Matrix. Despite that, they somehow still do the rabbit thing and continually grow in numbers exponentially. The strain on computational and electrical power necessitates sending a single multi-purpose mech to a (local?) star cluster and have it construct a Dyson Sphere to satisfy the greedy flesh-bags need on power.

I am a huge hard science fiction nerd and still think Ringworld and its sequel books are the greatest books in SF history. Despite not being all that much ā€œhardā€ SF (and more Space Opera-ish) the engineering problems described and the sheer size of the Ringworld in the books gets my imagination going even 25 years after my first (of many) read through the books.

And building a Dyson sphere as a project is like the ultimate project I can think of.

This game is really a wonder.
Usually, if you play some strategy games ā€œwondersā€ like that are collect 1000 pieces of unobtanium ding youā€™re doneā€¦have the tiniest of tiniest pat on your shoulder now off you go!

Not in this game. you actually design the shape/size of the sphere and each and every (!) piece you send into orbit is integrated not into an abstract counter of xxx/1000 but can be seen even from the planet you are standing on. Shipsā€™ travels are not abstracted, they can be followed on their travels between the stars, and the list goes on and onā€¦

This game is made by a team of five (!) people and it oozes passion! Wherever possible they go the extra mile to stay true to realism as much as possible.

Of course there were areas where clear sacrifices were made. You can see the planetā€™s curvature when zoomed in to max (basically a roundabout way of saying the planets are really REALLY small).
Also, the distances in space are also reduced several magnitudes to feed into the gameplay, but other than that they try to stay true to the needs of orbital physics as possible.
I missed my first inter-planetary flight to a neighboring planet by underestimating the energy needed to adjust flight path and had the pleasure (?) to experience the gravity of my target planet playing a slingshot maneuver on me and sending me on my way to eternity between the starsā€¦oh well ā€œreload it isā€.

But still, looking up on the planet into the night sky and see the firmament (not abstracted, each of the stars you see can be travelled to later on) slowly wander over my head, and seeing the first sunrise on my second planet left me in aweā€¦
Unless you find a tidally locked planetā€¦that sun will never rise on the nightside there :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
while we are on that topic; rotation period, axial inclination, distance to star even the type of star (!!!) influences how much energy your solar energy collectors can produce.

This game is a time-consuming black hole and I am enjoying it. Also, I am quite bad at it as it seems? Based on the results other players have reached in 30-40 hours I am quite slooooow and inefficient. They must be Factorio veterans I guess and also being ā€œwunderkinderā€ of factory planning/efficiency since my efforts take a lot more timeā€¦and wayyyy more conveyor beltsā€¦but still!

What an amazing game!

Question for the masses: Mrs. biffpow is looking for a matching game or puzzle game, that she can play to zone out at night whilst listening to her audio books. She wonā€™t try anything that has ads (unless it has an unlock to make them go away) or anything with timers or currency. She is on a google phone.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated : )

Not my field of expertise, but Puzzle Quest? The original games were released in the ā€œpremium games on mobile are still a thing eraā€ if I am not mistaken? Or is it too much RPG for her?

I really liked Evergarden (I play on iPad but I expect itā€™s on Android too). That would probably fit the bill.

Flipflop solitaire is good and can be a zone-out game at lower difficulties. It has ads, but with a IAP to remove them.

Gnomitaire is also a good, free option by our friends at tinytouchtales.

Maybe Hero Emblem? Itā€™s at least a premium take on the PuzzleQuest genre that is now infested with F2P dreck.

Some very chill puzzle games are the ones from Hamster on Coke Game Lab (Scalak, OXXO, Zenge) and Rainbow Train (Naboki, Push, Klocki, Up Left Out). Handcrafted puzzles hence finite levels, but theyā€™re cheap (and available as bundles on iOS, I donā€™t know about the Android versions).

She loves Threes, which is indeed fantastic : ) But I think sheā€™s sick of it, as itā€™s been her go-to for the last several months. I tried her on Twelvesmith, but it didnā€™t stick, so I think maybe sheā€™s tired of numbers.

I love PQ, but itā€™s too RPG for her. I know, I know, how did I marry this woman?
