I downloaded Save 10% on Mewgenics on Steam

Haven’t spun it up yet but looks fun

I’m on a family vacation without my Steam Deck but am 99% sure I’m buying Mewgenics when I get back. Would love to hear some impressions from anyone who has it, though.

So I have about 3 hours into Mewgenics at the moment. First let me say that while I don’t love ā€œpottyā€ humor (heck I played Kingdon of Loathing daily for like 7 years) I don’t avoid it if the gameplay is good. So I can’t really speak to the humor of this game as I know it is part of the appeal, and I don’t find it particularly clever.

I think 3 hours for this game is very early to tell how this is going to feel in the long run. As I think I have barely ā€˜scratched’ the surface.

Essentially you have a house of cats, and they literally screw each other and make babies (if the sexual interaction was not same sex, which I have not seen yet, but I understand happens) and then those babies grow up, and there is a new stray each day outside the house. And when you have 4 that you want to take on a mission (that have not been on a mission, as cats can only go out on missions one time and then are either breeding stock or have other uses I will let you discover) you run a slay the spire type run of about 10 nodes, I think 6 are fights and the others are events and level them up and earn gear and food (as you have to feed the cats in the house) and then decide to go deeper (another 10 nodes in a different area) or bring them home.

Cats are equipped with collars to give them classes (traditional, tank, fighter, caster, healer etc) as the run starts and that helps determine some starting skills in addition to what is ā€˜bred into them’ and skills available on level up. Ideally you are thinking about what skills you might want to pass down to a kitten.

Each battle is not that long, but maybe a little longer than I would like. There is a very into the breach type feel to it, but with way more depth, I have seen all types of enemies that do all sorts of crazy things and I have already seen a lot of very different skills/spells for my cats and I understand the variety and depth is very deep.

But I find each fight a little exhausting for some reason, and so I play a fight and then turn the game off and come back to it later. I am not sure why.

For me I would give it a 6/10 so far, with the potential for it to grow on me and be a 7/10. I think there are some of you that will love it though.

Nice write up!

I am really enjoying it at the moment - though the progression system of releasing cats has me scratching my head. I am not sure if I should be using all my food breeding and taking in strays or just getting a squad of 4 to go on an adventure.

The randomness behind the class system makes this a bit of a brain scratcher. Each class has a number of active and passive abilities, however you only get presented a small number when you level up - so you have to work with what you have rather than going for an ideal build.

On top of that, your original active/passive you get from the class isn’t known until you land - so sometimes you can have great synergy walking in and other times you are staring at these cats going - how can I put together a strategy.

I think the exhausting part of each battle is two fold; one is that your HP/damage carry over meaning you need to try top off or else the next stage is harder, and second the damage output from enemies is so high that you never feel quite safe. I always take the tank and cleric class at the moment because of that.

I am sitting at a 7/8, this game will get a lot of hours, but it will take a lot of hours as well

Bringing this up from the dead cause I don’t think anyone replied. I just grabbed it (Clair Obscur: Expedition 33) on the Legion Go S and am really enjoying it. Runs well on the handheld, no stutters, although some detailing takes a hit.

It’s beautifully… drawn?… has great music, and is fun so far. Think Elden Ring level of world, although a bit more on rails, with JRPG combat and skills, plus a dodge / parry mechanic? Very cool storyline so far too.

it won so many rewards! incl. Game of the Year 2025 i think.
definitely a blockbuster.
have watched many streamers playing it. amazing artwork.

the next hot thing is Arc Raiders! best shooter graphics i’ve ever seen.
players of all skill levels can have fun.

I’ve eyed ARC Raiders up but I’m not the best shooter and it’s all pvp from what I’ve read?

It’s PvPvE, so there’s enemies on the map, and interactions with other players can be friendly or not, as you and they like. Pretty good, got some great maps. Gave me my biggest pant-shitting moment in gaming last year.

Apparently theres grief based matchmaking (though Im sure thats not the official term)

So if you play friendly you find yourself in friendlier lobbies. Like to be an arsehole? Then go play with the other arseholes where you belong

This is the only thing I’ve ever read about Arc Raiders which made me remotely interested in trying it.

This is definitely part of the matchmaking; you still get matches with utter cunts, but fewer of them if you don’t start fights.

i keep watching Donnie O’Sullivan (donnie_oh on twitch and YT).
he’s friendly and so meets 98% friendly players donating him blueprints and weapons and lending a helping hand (gun) against arc drones.
waiting on him to crouch into an exit or helping him whith a defibrillator to get up again.
ā€œas you shout into the forest so it shouts back on you.ā€
he’s really a bad player with bad aiming but always emphasizing how much fun the game is for him.

not to forget that you can play in a group with friends.
Holsten likes it and all his friends like it too.
i’m no shooter player but am close to give it a try.
nearly no one doesn’t like Arc Raiders.

Only 15% of total playtime was from games released last year.

Me, a Prinny of culture(?) finishing my second play-trough of Subnautica, a 2014 game: ā€œHmm?ā€

Just finished my first Slay the Spire 2 run. More of the same, at first glance, but that is not a bad thing at all. The game promises different cards/enemies/heroes added (most of which I haven’t seen, obviously, and it just feels slicker somehow. I’ll check back in around the 100 hour mark and share how it’s going.

StS2 will have to fight Mewgenics for my time, though. The humor doesn’t always hit for me, but the gameplay is awesome, and it keeps revealing more layers.

I probably shouldn’t buy any other games for a while. Probably.

Too many games, not enough time.

The Legion has really opened up my gaming opportunities. Splitting time between ARC Raiders, Ghost of Tshushima, and Blue Prince.

StS2 is the type of game that makes me jealous of PC gamers but the sad reality is that I’m never going to disappear into my office and play PC games. I just bide my time playing the myriad other roguelike deck builders on iOS until StS2 (hopefully) releases.

Here’s my question: is StS standing the test of time? I think StS is great, but it was a phenomenon because it was one of the first of its kind and did the formula best at the time. It has a lot more competition now, though. Does StS2 feel fresh enough to compete in a saturated market?

StS is 75% off on steam ATM. Not that anyone interested doesn’t already have it, I would guess.

For me, StS was not as engaging as it was for a lot of other people. But I think I feel that way about all rogue-like deckbuilders, as I’ve tried others and they never stick very long for me. If StS2 were to bring some new wrinkles to the formula, I’d be curious, but I’m not seeing that from early reports. I’ll be curious to see what impressions @geigerm has after 100+ hours.

@js619 did you see this? :
