What are you playing?

In the case of Phantom Leader and many others, it’s a result of the game not being 64-bit, and the dev not updating it (usually due to cost vs. return). I believe Phantom Leader was the work of one guy. I wish the IOS store would recognize if you logged in on an old device and route you to old games that would still run on that device, rather than just delete them out of the store entirely.

I’ve been playing Monster Sanctuary quite a bit this week. It was billed as a Metroidvania (sweet) mixed with a monster catcher (awesome). It lives up to that billing and is pretty good, though it doesn’t really reach the level of being great. It has great 16-bit art and an awesome soundtrack. Monsters all have skill trees that you can put points in to, making the RPG element of the game feel fairly deep. Battles are turn-based and feature plenty of buffs, debuffs, and elemental weaknesses. On the metroidvania end, the game is a 2D sidescrolling platformer with areas that cannot be reached until you find certain abilities (like the quintessential double jump) or capture a monster that gives you certain abilities, like breaking bricks, activating switches, etc.

It has been a fun diversion and I’ll be lying if I said it didn’t get me hooked. I think I bought if for $3 on my PS5, which is a steal.

I am trying to play through Yakuza: Like a Dragon and am a little torn. I love the idea of a turn-based RPG set in a modern/real world, and I doubly love that Ichiban’s imagination turns that world back in to something goofy. I like the story premise up to where I am at, and Ichiban is a very likable protagonist. That said, one of my favorite things about RPGs is discovering new sights and that seems to be lacking this far in LaD - the city looks fine it is not very interesting; this has quickly led to some of the game becoming tedious. I’ll keep it up for now but I have read that the game is pretty long. I have a sense that it might start to drag and there are other RPGs sitting on my shelf begging to be played.

Unfortunately, it is quite a bit long.

I LOVE Turn-based, and I have finished every (localized) Yakuza/Judgement game that came before Y:LaD at least once (half of them thrice). Still my love for the source material hasn’t shielded me completely from the tedium present in this game. Not helping is that the game is Front and very heavily back-loaded….leading to a VERY meandering middle of the road part. So….hang in there?

I hope for Y:LaD 8 (Infinite Wealth) and the Spinoff Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii to win me back again (and maybe Project Century…………..still upset we get this instead of a third Judgment game)

Curiously, I haven’t played a single Dragon Quest game before Y:LaD ever. I have DQ11, but I plan to dip my toe in DQ with the DQ3 2DHD and DQ 1+2 2DHD remakes.

I have been meaning to mention this game Once Upon a Galaxy on here that I think is excellent. I have a bunch of time in it the past few weeks. It is on both Steam and iOS (maybe android also). It’s a deck builder/Auto Battler that I am just obsessed with. It’s Free to Play with a monetization scheme that just accelerates unlocks, but overall what comes with the FTP model is more than enough for lower MMRs.

Weird narrative TV watching game, where Earth accidently starts receiving the entertainment feeds of a far away planet called Blip. No real gameplay, just exploring the channels and ceefax of a strange culture.

and Balatro meets Inscryption in a slot machine.

but as of Tuesday it will likely be entirely FFT - The Ivalice Chronicles for the foreseeable future.

Clover Pit is ok. The problem is it a slot machine. About 30% of the runs I started last night failed in the first round…there is a balance/design problem with the charms available at the start I think. The game has good style and a good premise, but I think the game designer does not really understand game design.

Waiting on news from my GameStop preorder being shipped. Can’t wait to try Tactician mode.

Hades II, on Switch.

It’s as good as expected. Takes what was great about Hades and builds on it, tells a different story, and the weapons and gods feel fresh. Typical Supergiant quality for the graphics, music, and little touches throughout. Just as unforgiving as the first although not as brutal as some. (I’m glaring at you, Silksong. Yeah, you. Fuck you).

11/10 recommended.

Don’t speak ill of Silksong! Or at least give it another chance…

I feel like Silksong has established the norm that “fuck you” can be a love language.

I’m still giving it chances, it just has to wait its turn now instead of being the number one reason I nearly hurl my switch against a wall.

I’m a huge metroidvania fan but I never even finished Hollow Knight. I’ve wanted to dive back in and then move on to Silksong but I’m not the best gamer and I’m worried it would be an exercise in frustration.

Same. I find silksong a little easier than HK but still difficult

Forgot this was out today. I look forward to hearing what you think, as it will determine whether I buy this version : )

Oh, it’s an impulse buy, but I don’t know if I’m playing it soon, so don’t hold your breath.

FFT is great. The full voice acting adds a lot. Tactician mode is a bit simple since it seems to mostly just adjust damage levels, but it does help keep me on my toes with a game I have beaten at least 26-27 times. And at least they kept most of the WotL translation.
