Stately Play Decathlon 2021

Accepted!

@SpiceTheCat - what’s your wingspan user name? Think I have @irishdomer08 set to go. Mine is schlotzky.

Assuming most people are playing on iOS, note that Wingspan only uses banners, not badges.

Personally, I changed the Notifications setting to “Persistent” for Wingspan for the duration.

Maybe some day we will be able to find 10 perfect apps that everyone wants to play… but I doubt it! :stuck_out_tongue:

@HostileApostle what’s your wingspan name?

why only weren’t enough votes for “Steam Rails to Riches”??

great classic by Martin Wallace with notifications, banners and frankly the best replays of all apps.
(what could beat little trains steaming along the tracks?)

Weird, wasn’t finding you before, unless it’s case sensitive usernames and then I hate this app already. Anyway, invites out, @Mirefox is up first.

I hadn’t put it in yet…had only played offline to that point.

I’d vote for Wingspan over Steam any day but I’d love to see Steam show up in a future decathalon. In fact, there are a whole bunch of games I’d like to see show up. I fear getting in a rut where 80% of the games are the same every year.

I don’t disagree that we should mix things up, I just think we need to be conscious of the cost also.

I think this year we added four new games, Sagrada, Castles of Burgandy and Wingspan that we used, and Terraforming Mars also, which we ended up not using.

My guess is that most of us are ok with 3-4 new games a year for the Decathlon, but we should keep in mind to not add more than 3-4 a year i would think. My opinion only though.

Thanks for the comments, as always, folks! I am, of course, beginning to think about the 2022 Decathlon now that we are approaching the end of the 2021 event.

I would definitely like to include a couple of “oldies but goodies” that have missed the last rotation or two, and of course there are usually at least a couple of new games to consider.

The vote to pick game 10 was an interesting new twist, and on the down side we had a couple of games that had to come out of the original list or during the year due to issues.

I’m leaning towards doing a “pre-vote” to ensure games are still viable (I simply can’t stay on top of whether every game nominated is actually suitable for async tournament play) and then maybe splitting the Decathlon into two halves with a vote in the middle…

Happy to hear any and all thoughts on format, and I also don’t want to assume I’m running the show in 2022 either - I’ll be happy to do it again, but also open if anyone else wants to take it on!

Sorry, just bought the game. I’m SpiceTheCat.

Alright, invites out to @irishdomer08 and @SpiceTheCat. Good luck!

A silent 7 days of bird watching and playing…

How y’all going? I think we are two cubes into round two, with boards developing slowly.

Table 5 is just starting round 2.

PS - No ravens spotted yet.

Don’t know about you, but our game’s been painful for me–having a hell of a time getting the food I need to play any birds at all.

Just about finished Round 1 here.

To @geigerm’s point - this is an engine building game at its heart, and frankly not one that turns into an Formula 1 race car engine… there is some opportunity to do “double action moves”, but overall it’s a more methodical and “relaxed” game in my experience, and - especially in round 1 - you definitely will find yourself resource constrained… then again, maybe I’m playing it wrong! :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t think you’re wrong; at some point within the first couple turns you’re going to find yourself taking an action like “get 1 food” or “lay 1 egg” out of necessity, but it feels so much like a weak or wasted action.

Right - and, of course, async play only exacerbates that feeling.
