Stately Play Decathlon 2019

Well played! I was lucky to get the right cards at the right moment, so I could build up a culture factory and at the same time keep up with the military side.

As per the 2018 decathlon (or was it 2017?), the event was won by the person filling in the scores, so take that however you like…

Yes, the winner was myself, with 32 points and 7 1st place finishes in the events, followed closely by @irishdomer08 with 29 points and 5 1sts, then a tie between @feederofgoats and @Baelnor at 27 and 5 1sts. This bumped @Codington off the podium, as his 27 points only had 4 1sts. I’m not sure if we ever agreed upon a tiebreaker, so an executive decision was made.

Thanks to everyone that stuck it out through the years! Maybe we can try this again in 2021. If we do, I think we should try to get some newer entries into the event. There’s a lot of great games here, but it is time for some new blood… Also, as much as I love Twilight Struggle, I feel like it was a mistake to include it in the event. I’d consider cutting all two player games, but definitely long two player games.

Congrats! And thank you for doing all of that.

I’m really surprised I finished as high as I did. I fully expected to be almost last.

Well played all!

I’ve always known I’m bad at games for some reason but it is nice to quantify how bad…

You did amazing! Such a great competition as usual, enjoy playing with you all so much!

That was a really fun marathon! Thanks so much to @Hardco for organising…

Thanks for organizing and congrats!

Why wait until 2021? Let’s start a new decathlon in 2020! At least start the discussion and game selection.

This may be a big IF for me, but IF I were to play again, I would really like a vastly different selection of games. There have been many that have come out that easily could have been on this list, and there are some that are very different. I also wasn’t a big fan of having both Ascension and Star Realms in the same decathalon as they are so similar.

Congrats and thanks to @Hardco, and thanks to all of you for the great games. I agree that I’d like to see the game list shaken up a bit, although it’s been so long I don’t remember how we chose games. Was there a poll, with the top 10 games chosen?

If we ā€œbrandā€ the decathlon as the ā€œ3rd Stately Play Decathlon,ā€ it’s not necessary to put a year on it …

I’m pretty sure we voted on games to include in the decathlon. If I wanted to go again with 10 completely different games, some titles I’d put up for vote would be:

  • Istanbul
  • Raiders of the North Sea
  • Sagrada
  • Castles of Burgundy
  • Fort Sumter (if we wanted to keep 2p)
  • Indian Summer
  • Isle of Skye

I’m definitely not as big of a fan of these games as most in the last decathlon, but it would be some variety (except for using the same developers all the time because Digidiced and Dire Wolf seem to be doing everything).

Roll for the Galaxy and Viticulture are two more options

oh yes, and what an all-encompassing poll that was!
@Snotty128 had done a very complete research to include all playable games (and some unplayables too that had to be sorted out because of bugs or other problems).

games that are back in shape are Small World 2 and possibly Ticket to Ride.
a great new game is Yellow & Yangtze.
Roll for the Galaxy is fabulous and a winner and well suited for 4P games too (coming out on August 25th).
classics like LeHavre, Puerto Rico and Steam were left in the cold in the last two Decathlons.
Potion Explosion and Dragon Castle come to my mind.
like Tikal, Ra, Galaxy Trucker and Summoner Wars.
even Disc Drivin’ 2?
i personally would love to play TitanHD but must admit that may be a bit too much to handle.

but yes! yes! to Castles of Burgundy and Viticulture.

Well, it seems @hardco finally got his revenge on me for briefly not running this the way he wanted… LOL just kidding, of course!

Glad we finally made it through and thanks to all for some great games, as always.

As for the next one, I’m for sure in again and ready to start whenever!

I would second the suggestion that we ditch 2 player only games for the next one and that we try to make sure some newer games are included.

One thought in keeping with the Decathlon theme would be to come up with ten categories and then possibly vote on games in each category (I do love to see voting on the games to be played…)

  1. Worker Placement

  2. Deck Building

  3. Tile Placement

  4. Area Influence

  5. Economic

  6. Heavy Weight (BGG Weight 4+)

  7. App Store Top Ranked (Ranking at the time of voting)

  8. BGG Top Ranked (Ranking at the time of voting)

  9. New and Notable (released in the last year)

  10. Oldies but Goodies (released 5+ years ago? Just remembered it’s been 10 years since Carcassonne and my own Medici and Ra came out! :open_mouth: )

Random thoughts off the top of my head… I’m sure @hardco will come up with something he likes better.

great idea, @Codington :+1:

and i have a proposal for another point reward system.
elegance of simplicity.
4-2-0 or even better (and effectively the same) 2-1-0 .

more convinving than the imbalanced and strange 4-2-1 rewards with that imminent downgrade for 2nd place.

winning a point for losing a round? a gift for holding on?

I like making last place 0.

Another scoring system I’ve seen used is 5-2-0 to give the winner more separation.

Maybe we put scoring system to a vote along with the various games for the next one? Though does it really matter if @Hardco wins every game anyway? :upside_down_face:

My only concern with making 3rd place worth 0 points is it might encourage more people missing rounds. I played some games I don’t like because I didn’t want to take 0 points … ask me to play something I don’t even own in the next decathlon and I’ll probably just opt out of that round. I don’t know if that’s a bad thing, necessarily, just something to consider.

so just as i had suspected.
the point reward for losing was a hold-on bait, an educational motivation, an appreciation for taking on the effort to play unliked and unowned games.

well, you have an argument here. a downer that it is needed though.
when a player accepts the Decathlon challenge ist should be clear to him that it’s not for missing or for opting out of rounds.

but ok. then we should think on 5-3-1 rewards! at least it would be better balanced and no longer a downgrade for 2nd place.

I agree, and, after further reflection, I’d probably be a good sport and suck it up and play. I just truly loathe some of the games up for consideration—seeing them in the decathlon just means I have a second opportunity to rage-delete them from my devices once that round is done.
