The Cascadia app just released on iOS. $10 US, which seems standard these days.
Unfamiliar with the game - any good?
I like it a lot. Itās a puzzle. You take a tile with multiple terrain types on it with the attached animal piece drawn from a bag. You add the tile and piece to your growing tableau. The worst part about the game is that it can take as long to score as it does to play. My family has enjoyed it a lot.
Saw an exciting announcement when I logged onto Steam tonight: Monster Train 2, coming later this year! Demo is available now, not that I need to play it to know Iāll buy the game day 1.
A preorder just went live for Kingdomino on iOS. It is out in about four months for $5 US. It has a 3D look, which usually concerns me for board games, but the game is simple enough that it might work here, though the Asmodee Carcassone and new Tocket to Ride have certainly shown why this shouldnāt be doneā¦
Youāre right about 3D view being more of a gimmick when it comes to board games.
One screenshot shows a top down view. Hopefully thatās actually an in game option. Though itās small, so hopefully top down can be zoomed without then immediately going 3D or something.
Grabbed Blasphemous on iOS. Billed as Castlevania meets Dead Cells when what they really should have said is, āDid you enjoy Elden Ring? Did you find it too easy? Then youāll like our game, which is as hard as Elden Ring but with the fun addition of shitty touch controls!ā
I jest. But this shit is unforgiving. Use a controller. Youāll still suck. $7.99 well spent.
That reminds me that Iāve been wanting a controller for my iPhone for some time. Unused to dislike the fact that I had to take my phone out of its case to use them but I think the new Backbone works with a case. Maybe itās time to pull the trigger. Then I can get all the Symphony of the Night achievements and download games like Blasphemous and Dead Cells without regret.
I went with the Razer over the Backbone but at this point I couldnāt tell you what made me decide. Razer is solid though, fits my 16 Pro Max with an Apple silicone case with no problem.
I keep looking at the Cascadia app because it is begging me to download, but I just came across a 1-Star review titled āDigital Wolf is not good at thisā that questions why publishers continue to let Digital Wolf (their word, not mine) ruin games.
Sometimes I like to pretend some of these reviews are just corporate warfare because itās the only thing that makes them make sense.
Naysayers aka āTrollsā in this digital age. Itās good. Evergreen The Board Game app didnāt click with me. I tried hard to like it but moved on. Cascadia though gelled right from the get go. Dire Wolf had padded the app nicely - online and AI multiplayer / what I assume is the solo mode from the cardboard version / challenges / a career progression. It seems to be a little bit of a battery hog, particularly in comparison to Clank but thereās been a couple of updates since release and might have improved a little.
Dredge is out on iOS. I donāt know if itās flown under the radar or not because it is one of those indie darlings that I canāt gauge the popularity of. Itās a mix of fishing and lovecraftian horror with a pretty simple loop of fishing for money to get better gear to fish for better fish, etc., with the twist that there are some things lurking in the water that are best to avoid for your own sanity. Each fish has its own little mini game for catching, you can haul whatever you can fit in your boat Tetris-style, and you have to juggle how much you want to equip your boat versus how much space you want for your catch. Admittedly, Iāve only played part of the way through, but thatās because it was a game rental and I decided to wait for the full version on iOS. The game looks to be a bit pricey but you can download and try for free.
Piqued my interest. Looks Fallen London / Sunless Sea ish?
I havenāt played those, so I canāt comment. Expanding a little more on what I said, thereās also an element of exploration; as you improve your ship you are able to sail further and explore new seas and new ports. Fish are better, but danger is greater. Youāll also have an opportunity to improve your ports as well through upgrading certain services.
Itās an intriguing atmospheric game with a good loop.
I really enjoy Dredge on Switch and reviewed it here a while ago:
Thereās nothing about the controls that would make me think it wouldnāt convert well to ios.
I liked Dredge, but my elder child adored it. Curious that ācozyā and āunsettlingā blend so well; perhaps a reflection of the unsettling nature of reality, such that it feels more honest?
Did a quick bit of research and it appears Dredge is priced the same on iOS as it is on Steam, which I find refreshing. The $12.49 launch discount for the full game unlock matches the lowest Steam price thus far.
I preordered it⦠though I have no idea when or how much I paid/when that money came out of the accountā¦
I have a 5hr plane trip today, will have to make sure it is on my iPad and charged!
Itās free to try, so you havenāt paid anything yet!
But that sale! They make it really hard to not impulse buy the thing when itās $12 or so off.
