ā€œSequelā€ to Plague Inc!

So I picked up Dungeon Clawler after you mentioned it, it had already been on my radar, and have been playing it on this family trip to Paris a bunch and this is a very clever game and addition to the deck builder genre. On one hand it is surprisingly familiar take on StS (you are going to take 10 damage on the enemy attack so you need to make sure you have 10 armor to block and then use your 2nd move to get attacks in) and then the randomness of the drops, plus the item types (I finally beat the game for the first time with a full metal magnetic build) and all of the other crazy stuff going on, it is a very fresh take.

Yes, itā€™s fun and addicting. And even though there is a little more randomness due to the claw, the itemization does lend itself well to setting up combos and builds.

My phone batteryā€™s getting a workout between After Inc. and Dungeon Clawler. Really enjoying both right now.

Also, Kelseyā€™s post a few days ago got me to try Cinco Paus again, and Iā€™m glad I did. I think my initial impressions were hampered by a lack of a guide to what the different symbols meanā€”having the ability to look those up quickly helps me enjoy the game more.

I never really loved Plague Inc and I never played Rebel Inc. My son, however, begs me to buy Plague Inc. expansions. After Inc. is a good alternative to more Plague?

After Inc. is a very lightweight survival/4X game, which is great for someone like me who canā€™t handle real games in those genres but wants to like them. And the zombie apocalypse theme is present there but not overwhelming.

I appreciate how streamlined the scenarios are and how quickly they play. I also know the gameā€™s going to be well-supported for a while given Ndemicā€™s past work.

I didnā€™t love Plague Inc. but like this one so far.

Quick note about Eclipse. If you liked the original version youā€™ll definitely feel very happy with the sequel for single player. As I thought itā€™s the original app with updated artwork and Iā€™m guessing the changed rules / components for the second edition. AI seems faster as well.

Multiplayer though isā€¦.challenging.

  • Fixed game options with no alternate. (Async/1 day move timer)
  • no friend invites that I could find
  • all games public
  • games arenā€™t named. To find someone you need to search each game
  • no turn notifications that Iā€™ve received yet

The big thing though is that joining a game is an exercise in frustration - specifically selecting a race to play. Some games will accept your choice of race - others wonā€™t register you selection leaving you unable to join.

So SP is good. MP needs work.

An insight to what all the in app purchases are for after inc though? Itā€™s a very cheap initial purchase but then thereā€™s things like ā€œultimate packā€, ā€œseason 1 packā€, ā€œcritical massā€, ā€œsurvival guideā€.

Oh, very disappointing. I also have it and Iā€™m playing against the AI to try remind myself how not to go bankrupt.

Very minor irritation is having to hand-pick the AI opponents and not being able to select a random setup, unlike every other game in existence.

Basically all the rough edges are still there.

Started on Imbroglio, and Iā€™m loving it. Thanks.

Survival guide gets you meta progress upgrades after completing maps, access to more leaders and removes ads.
Season one pack initially unlocks the second campaign map section (will have 2 or 3 more sections it unlocks once they release) + the stuff from the survival guide
The Ultimate gets you all the game content theyā€™re ever going to release for it + the survival guide stuff.
I opted to just buy the ultimate since Iā€™m loving the game so far and know theyā€™ll deliver updates as they have with their previous games.

Are we close to a verdict on this one?

Same old app, new rules? Do we think it could be a good since option?

I also grabbed the After Inc. ultimate pack earlier today. Itā€™s on a massive discount from its list price right now ($15, which is 75% off).

I always had a theory that Eclipse and the Dancer army for N. Hex basically broke Big Daddyā€™s.

I forget the exact timing ā€“ it was years and years ago ā€“ but those were both heavy lifts. There was even a ā€œgaming inside jokeā€ going around about how Dancer would be impossible to code.

It broke their brains, man ā€¦

In all fairness, Dancer breaks everyoneā€™s brain.

2026 but Iā€™m still stoked for this.

Iā€™m hoping they donā€™t sacrifice quality for quantity. Every DWD game has had its issues but they usually get resolved. I think they hit their peak quality with Root but there have been some questionable design decisions, in my opinion, since then. Neither Fox in the Forest nor Wings of Glory has asynch; Munchkin might not, either, but I donā€™t remember. WoG would be amazing if it included it. Then weā€™ve got the lack of final scores that have plagued Dune and Clank!, and I know it might sound nitpicky but Clank! is a visual abomination on phones because of the most low-effort solution Iā€™ve seen to adjusting the screen ratio. I really like DWD and have bought just about everything they have but Iā€™m hoping these are speed bumps rather than a trend towards sloppiness. I think we have Cascadia and Ark Nova coming up from them and I hope they nail both of those.

Munchkin would be impossible with async IMO, way too many gotcha cards you can play at any moment of anyones turn.

But what theyā€™ve done with Dune and Root Iā€™m very happy with so far, so Iā€™m hoping more like those with their implementation of Arcs.
