Outstanding!

Of course we expect game breaking bugs for the first 3 months because Asmodee, but it’s a good step.

They really do suck as developers, but I suppose if there is $ to be made from a design, they’ll put the work in.

Drafting remains a chore in asynchronous, unfortunately. Not sure how to get around that.

Jaws of the Lion out now as DLC for Gloomhaven Digital.

I feel like I’m being taunted. This might be #1 on my iOS wish list.

If by “iOS” you mean “Switch”, then I agree with you : )

Assuming xbox and ps5 for this one as opposed to Switch?

Has anyone tried Gunfire Reborn? It looks very promising. It is billed as a FPS Roguelite.

In this edition of “I Played It So You Don’t Have To” I bring you Catalyst Black.

Super Evil Megacorps did a really good job bringing a quality MOBA to mobile years ago with Vainglory. At the time, it was the closest we had on mobile to the big games like LoL and DotA. Unfortunately, they abandoned it sold it or something and it’s been a mess for a while. In the meantime, they were heavily promoting their in-development Catalyst Black.

The game is a twin stick-style team shooter with different modes like team death match, capture the flag, etc. Prior to entering the game, you chose a loadout, which includes a primary weapon, a heavy weapon, and a mask, which lets you turn into a “primal” monster that can wreak havoc on the battlefield. The game looks fantastic and runs butter smooth. So far, so good, right.

Here’s the rub: you can upgrade all of your equipment using the game’s currency. That means two people with the exact same load out can be vastly different powers regardless of actual skill. I despise this kind of monetization more than anything and think it has no place at all in any multiplayer game that wants to be take seriously. Other than grinding for currency, what is my incentive to play? You can’t say the game is skill-based when someone can simply spend more money than me and win regardless of how well I play. Ugh, I’m frustrated.

I’ve seen some people commenting that even though the game is pay to win you can grind out enough materials to stay competitive. YMMV but that’s a no for me.

Sure, you can grind out enough currency to become competitive. You’re merely content for the whales until then.

Of course, once enough people catch up to the whales, they’ll give them something new to buy to regain their edge

(I don’t know this game at all, just speculating)

Yes. Have played Gunfire Reborn and highly recommend it. The touch controls are very customisable on mobile too, they’ve done a great job.

My only gripe is currently it requires you to be online for the loading of the game, after which you can go offline, which makes little sense for the player but I guess maybe it’s a server check thing for the publisher.

Gameplay itself is engaging. It’s kind of like borderlands as a roguelike. Admittedly I find the first stage quite repetitive (roguelike so you’ll start again a lot), being indoor corridors/rooms, but still, the fun in the gameplay makes up for that.

There is a new Paperback app on iOS called Paperback Vol. 2. I’m not quite sure how it differs from the original but I’ll likely be picking it up for my next vacation and can report back. My wife and I quite enjoy the tabletop game and the original app is serviceable.

Great find!

Here’s their homepage with a vague description of improvements…

Hero Realms will be launching to the public June 6th.
I was part of the KickStarter and got an email saying that all progress will be reset on launch day.
It plays well, as you would expect. There is even a campaign, which I’ve not completed just yet. Seems more like a Star Realms campaign instead of a Ruin of Thandar campaign.

Like with Star Realms, there is also a very big fan community that runs lots of different tournaments. Some really neat formats have been created also. You can find more information about them at the Realms Rising Discord at https://discord.gg/QwnGX5PF

How is Hero Realms? I only play SR via the app, but it sure is good.

It’s pretty fun, but haven’t spent a huge amount of time on it yet.

Quick pivot - anyone keen or interested in Diablo Immortal?

interested of course.
but not sure about the verdict.
i will play and then decide.

Finally beat this for the first time tonight after a good 10 or so runs and failing miserably again and again. Lovely text based interactive fiction that really captures the feeling of exploration and discovery with a difficulty curve on par with something like the original Out There. Sort of The Expanse, but if Humanity wasn’t preoccupied with in-fighting.
