Ive struggled to convince my kids that losing is fun. If I were to introduce them to roguelites, it’d have to forefront meta progression
Yes, losing as part of the experience is not an easy lesson for kids. Mine did enjoy Juicy Realms, though, which is a rogulike shooter. I think as long as there is some clear progression that they can see it isn’t as bad.
Mine enjoyed Dawncaster on iOS and really like Hades, although they’re not great at either.
Rogue Legacy 2? I believe the cartoon “violence” should be on an acceptable level, also the incremental stuff is fine IMHO, since you always work to something and this should soften the blow of ending a run.
Also a LOT less tension then Hades IMHO.
I’m looking for for the card-based roguelikes for them. I did like the first Rogue Legacy, though, so it’s a good recommendation for me .
Cobalt Core may work well? Good range of difficulty settings, strongly-characterised cast.
Why did no one warn me about Loop Hero? Huh? Who is gonna give me back my life eh?
Wildfrost fans, any tips? I only recently started but haven’t gotten past maybe my third boss yes. I figure things will get a little easier as I build up my village and get some better cards.
One big question I have is when I’m choosing my route, is there a hierarchy to “treasures?” I tend to avoid those caves that give money and I tend to go towards charms where possible, but is there a general consensus that maybe charms>companions>treasure, or anything like that?
Also, is there any card rarity? I’m just curious.
Not sure on rarity.
I go for cards that trigger fast, charms or actions that make you trigger faster, cut cards, and also crowns. Love crowns. I will go money into shops for crowns over almost everything else.
My logic is, quicker you get your people there, the faster the cool down, the more you do.
And don’t forget you can move every unit every round
I tend to hit those money caves if I know there’s a shop coming up and I’m low-ish on money.
Pretty sure there’s no card rarity. As for treasure hierarchy … probably depends on your build? I tend to concentrate around one, maybe two, damage types as well as some sort of defense/healing. Sometimes that means more companions (although there’s a max); sometimes more items. Pick a lane early, though, and avoid overstuffing your deck–that’s super easy to do given how infrequently the Muncher shows up so you can remove cards from your deck.
Getting your good cards out fast is a must, though–agree 100% with @Baelnor on that and the usefulness of crowns. And once you’ve got the core of your build, throwing charms on those cards to increase their usefulness is very helpful.
I finally beat a run with the first clan. My leader was aimless and hit 3 times. I loaded up with as many charms as possible so things were proccing frequently.
I see, though, that like StS, I didn’t truly “beat” the game.
I’m working on the second clan now and it is a bit more complicated, relying far more on buffs and debuffs.
I am making progress, slowly but surely.
This is a good one.
I didn’t quite get to the “true end” before I shelved it. Got to 9 crown mods.
That’s me hitting my difficulty wall
I think I walked away at 8 mods, but I do plan to go back at some point.
I’m finding Wildfrost on the harder side of these roguelikes. I finally made it to the final boss as the second clan but it was really hard having to beat my previous winning deck.
Ah well, I grind away.
No doubt–Wildfrost is very hard. I kind of love that your last winning deck is your opponent, though. Very novel way to structure a boss fight.
Yes! That was quite the surprise and a really awesome twist to the genre.
I might be about done with Wildfrost. I can’t beat it with the Shademancers and I can’t see how I ever will. I’ve unlocked everything except a few charms and I’ve tried all the builds I can think of, from giant Monch to a sacrifice army to overturn…I get wrecked when I face my previous winning team. With not much else to unlock I’m starting to feel like it is not going to happen.
Edit: Just did it. I had a Monch with about 8 charms, including smackback and frenzy. The last fight was tight but he was an unstoppable monster.
Loop Hero…this friggin game! I want to play REAL games again… with story…and stuff
bohooohooosniff
“Finished” Loop Hero…as far as you can finish a roguelite.
It took me about three months and scarily in my Year in Review by Nintendo it showed up in third place of my most played games this year…
I swear I only did it for multitasking podcast-time!
I am grateful to add this game to my “done” pile. Too many roguelites aren’t designed to go there ever. I still need to finish my first game in Rogue Legacy 2 and despite my many skill-issues with HADES (1) I still plan to play more of it (did reach the end twice) - Investment in a game world/lore is a heavy-duty drug!
I also have many skill issues with Hades, but the Razer Kishi I got for Christmas means I’ve dived back into the mobile version. Can also finally enjoy the mobile version of Dead Cells.
