Alright, can someone please explain why the US is invading Venezuela? Oil? Distraction? Stop migrants? Freedom? Communism? Socialism? Trumps 2025 New Yearâs Eve resolution? Show China that they can take Taiwan?

Oil probably not a major factor, Venezuelan oil is not that great although their potential reserves are large and the country could probably be exploited considerably. This looks like a very short, sharp regime change, replacing Maduro with someone more sympathetic to the US. Good distraction from the constant Epstein files/January 6th news recently. Likely hoping not to get bogged down in any sort of regime building and let the Venezuelan opposition to Maduro take power with US help.

Trump has long used a heuristic: if he feels an impulse to do something which seems like a big deal, do a little of it and gauge resistance. If there wasnât much resistance, go farther. He trusts his impulses more than he trusts strategic plans, and trusts others to act as guardrails. He heard that Maduro said bad things about him, worked up to war with Venezuela with little steps, and nobody stopped him.
Honestly, Iâm still livid at the respectable career military folks I know who assured me that this kind of thing absolutely would not happen because of military ethics.
