Crowdfunding: Where Your Wallet Goes To Die

I’ve been watching videos on BGG “Why you shouldn’t back this” but it’s not working. And I’m not even a CoB partisan! But I do like Awaken Realms. Hoping to come to my senses soon…

I still have a preorder for Flamecraft and crowdfunding of Paperback Adventures, more Too Many Bones, and Artisans of Splendent Vale outstanding (plus a Playdate, which should be coming in a few weeks). It’s left me feeling like my mental cache for holding crowdfundings/preorders is full. Which is kind of … good? I know I rarely care much about crowdfunding campaign exclusives, and I ought generally to wait for reviews before purchasing, but hype is real and has an effect.

What’s really messing with me are the improved editions games keep getting. For example, I keep thinking that, someday, I’d like to own War of the Ring. But there might well be a version with better iconography or tidier rules or an included tutorial or something in some future third edition, and the balance between making sure I get a copy before it goes out of print and never comes back vs. holding off until the speculated best version becomes available makes the whole thing put me in mind of my own mortality.

WotR already had that with the anniversary edition, IIRC. They will no doubt do it again for any big anniversary, but other than that I don’t see it improving. It sells out without fail.

I wondered what said video could possibly say, and was disappointed when all they could come up with was “don’t buy it if you don’t like CoB, or have never played it”.

yeah, that’s a good one, because: who doesn’t like CoB and who hasn’t played it?

A copy of 2nd Edition War of the Ring is de rigueur in every strategy gamer’s household. Pimp it out with items on Etsy if you like.

lol! I respect CoB, but I don’t love :).

Kind of like Scythe - I get it and will play, but don’t love

If you don’t fancy mini painting, there’s a great way to change your WotR to make the troops easily identifiable…

That game intrigued me, but the price tag along game length made it a no-go for me

And if you’re in the US, you can play a live-action version for free!

Has anyone got into Battletech miniatures before?

I have fond memories, but not sure if it is worth getting in to.
