Brand New Root Megathread

@Zebracadabra - heads up that it’s waiting for you in our game - I know the notifications don’t always work off-turn.

Have tried three times to enter. Nothing. It’s usually not this persistent. I’ll try again in a bit.

@Zebracadabra sorry, you’re up again!

Hm, I appear to have been booted from one of the games again.

Back to @feederofgoats

I‘m coming to the opinion that Root is a game I like the idea of more than I enjoy playing. It’s a neat concept, just not so much fun in practice.

Two caveats are that the iOS implementation is still not really reliable, and I’ve never played it in cardboard. Maybe it’s more fun in real life with active negotiation.

There have been a huge amount of bugs. I have emailed them on probably a half dozen occasions. They are good about responding and in most cases, have made fixes in a timely manner but there are still big problems.

JammaTal and I have discussed this at length.

Unfortunately, this is a game with so many decision trees and response points that the coding must be a nightmare, Even with the new expansions, I don’t see that getting better. Both Lizards and Riverfolk look highly complicated and the only way I’m going to learn them is repeated sessions with YT vids.

Nevertheless, I’ll stick with the app (and of course, play real cardboard if possible). The design is imho, fantastic.

The biggest failing of the app for me is the combination of unreliable notifications and auto-resign, which means you can time-out and be dumped out of a game with no warning. The other aggravation is the unskippable replay.

I’d like DW to adopt Digidiced‘s solutions here; the opponents can opt to take the resignation/win in the event of a time-out but don’t have to, and the replay is completely skippable.

I’ll carry on playing because the new factions are intriguing, even though I had no idea what was going on playing vs the Lizards and Otters in the game we just finished. Time to listen to the Space Cats Peace Turtles podcasts again.

In a positively TfM-esque spirit of optimism, would anyone like a game with the newly-released Exiles & Partisans deck?

Do we need to own the expansions?

I’ve been able to play as the lizards against my cousins who do not own that particular expansion. I don’t know if the same holds up for the newest expansion.

I’d be up for it

I’d play, but I’m a pushover. I am generally terrible at games and Root is certainly no exception.

Looks like we have a set. If everyone is happy, I’ll start a game with the original 4 races and the E&P deck.

If there’s more to come, I’d be interested.

Has anyone played co-op against the clockwork armies? It is a compelling way to play. I like the idea on paper - you know that cool war game where you fight for control of the map? Would you like to have an alternate way to play where you team up against “AI” decks? - but I don’t know how well it works in practice.

we do it in CIV6.
4 players as alliance vs hard A.I. bots.
it’s definitely fun.
and btw cross-platform iOS/PC.

Necro‘ing the thread, thanks to @Mirefox mentioning his lizardy cultists in the KotH thread. I haven’t played enough Root despite having some of the expansions. Anyone up for a game.

Me!!

I’d like to add that I would prefer the basic 4 factions for a start with the standard map for a couple of plays if possible. The game really shines at 4 players
