Time to weigh in. This is getting beyond ridiculous over one Raiders of the North Sea game. I agree with @irishdomer08 and am willing to wait. There’s nothing wrong with being competitive but the reason most of us play is because it’s fun. Haven’t we played together long enough that we don’t need to take screenshots to prove something?
Tournament administrators put a lot of time into organizing a competition so we can all enjoy playing each other. John has done a good job and I’m willing to do whatever he decides is best. He will make the right decision.
Wait for longer for what?! For Spice to show up?! It’s not clear that he has ABANDONED the game???
BY RULE, the timed out turn was his last turn and I’ve showed clear evidence that the final order is carved in stone. It will not change if he miraculously shows up in September to “play” that turn. He cannot finish first, he cannot finish last. The inviolable order of finish is:
- zebra
- Spice
- Hostile
I’m going to email Dire Wolf again to see if they can offer any kind of feedback.
In the meantime, this situation pisses me off. I guess I’m not as patient as some of you but then again, I am turning 80 years old on Wednesday. While I am normally a patient person, this is insane.
Nowhere in the tournament rules did I specify a turns per day requirement or tumeout penalty. Historically in tournaments we are at the mercy of the app for such constraints.
In this case, the game is still active, so until Spice either plays or times out we wait a bit longer.
Thank you for following up with direwolf support. I hope they fix their bug and love their games. Please take it easy on them and be polite, they make good games and have many more on slate. Let’s show them the async boardgaming community is a classy one.
that won’t be a problem. as a game designer himself Alan is a great communicator with other designers.
i have seen their email response. DireWolf support was happy and thankful that Alan documented that weird bug to them.
afaik shouldn’t a bot take over when a player times out in RotN?
and a player going into an (endless?) cycle of timeouts is a game busting bug indeed.
so let’s hope and wait on for a patch.
we should be ready to suspend the tourney for some weeks.
no problem. we did it for the Decathlon too.
i have played in so many games with @SpiceTheCat.
long ago in my Samurai tourneys, in many Brass games and we share the same passion for Yellow & Yangtze and have met in some random games recently.
he was my Brass mentor, always giving advice and teaching me.
i hope so much that he is ok and will come back.
The game is not active. There is no game Beyond what has already been played. There is only a timer bar that will continue to go round and round and round until the Earth is eaten by a red giant sun.
I RECEIVED A NOTIFICATION THAT THE GAME WAS OVER. “VIEW THE FINAL SCORES.”
Just for the sake of argument, let’s say Spice comes back from his travels and decides after all this time, “ok, now I will take my turn.” THE ORDER OF FINISH WILL NOT CHANGE.
The worst part will be that you all gave Spice extra time when any of us would have been booted from the game to be replaced by a bot. I would like someone, anyone, to explain why it is right for me or any of you to be booted after timing out and not for Spice.
You have some nerve, insinuating any possibility I’d be anything but polite to another designer. As Michael has explained, I am a designer and I have programmed games professionally before. I know what a bug is.
I resign from this tournament. I will keep on communicating with Dire Wolf and if they can report a final score, you’ll have it, for whatever it is worth.
it’s not about right or wrong.
a bug is a bug is a bug.
it hurts that it happened in the very last turn of a tourney game
I disagree. A game has rules. In this case, the rule is, if you are timed out, all your future turns are taken by a bot. Do I need to mention all the games that abide by this rule? I think not because you have all played many of them.
Meanwhile, you are patently allowing one player (and only this one player) to break the rule while others may not. How you can see that as fair is beyond my ability to appreciate.
When someone is missing for fully three timed out turns, that person should be considered as abandoning the game. How is this not obvious? Someone please inform this misguided soul.
Anyway, I will not be a party to a situation where one player is allowed to repeatedly break a rule without consequence. THIS MAKES NO SENSE.
Hopefully, I’ll have more to report from Dire Wolf including an official final score. But I’m done. I will not play if the rules cannot be faithfully followed.
what i wanted to say is that the game is just broken.
no one allowed Spice to break a rule.
so why not just wait for a fix?
of course it would be helpful too if @SpiceTheCat came back to tell us what happened (and obviously keeps “happening”) in the game.
i’m convinced he would if he could.
so i’m still worried about him.
Let me repeat. The game is* over. Spice timed out on his final turn, the bot took over and completed his turn, which by rule, triggered the notification I received that the game was complete, come view the scores.
If no one wants to accept my proof of the order of finish, then what happens if Dire Wolf does not want to Take the time to provide the scores (I have asked)? This is not a favor typically granted by developers. What if Spice shows up and the game does NOT give him a turn? That’s possible because a game end notification has already been issued. What if a Spice shows up and the game DOES award him a final turn? IMHO, that would be an awful precedent. We’re supposed to play by rules. The same rules for everyone.
Frankly, it’s disturbing that no one else will admit we are all supposed to play by the exact same rules.
Someone said he had taken a turn in a game today. Did you tell me? I forget where I saw it.
no, that was some time ago.
9 days ago he has finished his game vs JaneHatke in the Carcassonne tourney.
that’s a long time and a reason to be worried.
With another weekend coming to a close, I think enough time has gone by for @SpiceTheCat and I will post the next table matchups …
@Zebracadabra is your resignation final ?
I’ll play. Heck, I love the game.
Now that I made such a fuss about it, I’m sure i’ll lose but I’m okay with that.
At this point, I’m far more concerned about Spice, who seems to have disappeared from wherever he was. Mike (JammaTal) and I both had near fatal Heart episodes in the last few years but luckily, we were both able to communicate with buddies to keep everyone informed,
No word from Dire Wolf yet but I will continue to pester them. If you wish to wait for confirmation of the scores, that’s okay too. Again, I’m not at all sure they will be forthcoming but there is no question I won. I had a Warlord worth 2 VP card that would take me to 41. Neither Spice or Hostile had vp cards and both would have finished behind me.
He apparently took his turn int he Lords of Waterdeep that three of us are playing and that @SleepingGiant timed out on due to his illness.
I’m not sure what else is going on, though.

have sent a friend request to HostileApostle.
could create a password protected game too.
@irishdomer08, what do you think will reach him better?
or could you please notify Apostle that a friend request is waiting for him?
I just informed him…and he’s accepted it. Send off that game request
FYI
Just received another game overcome see the RotN scores. When I open it, there’s a new timer bar for Spice and no way to see the scores.
Emailed Dire Wolf again. JammaTal is copied to every communication.
