Wingspan players wanted

There are two ravens that have ability: crack an egg from another bird to get two of any food from the supply.

The killdeer/franklins gull have the ability crack an egg to draw two cards.

Why are they powerful? Well, they can allow you do do things outside of a normal habitats function. And if you join together, you only need to take “grassland” actions to lay eggs, whilst also drawing cards and getting food.

So by the time it was a couple of cubes into the second round I could “lay eggs” to;

  • lay three eggs
  • crack an egg for two good (raven)
  • crack an egg for two cards (killdeer)
  • lay an egg on this bird (quail)

One action netted me

  • two eggs
  • two food of any type
  • two cards

holy crab! that’s insane!
how can they let such imba birds fly around in their game??
they should be banned.

The odds of you getting them early and in tandem seems pretty low, though. And while they give an advantage you still have to account for bonus cards and round scoring. Ive never had any huge issues with them, but maybe I’m wrong and logging exponentially more plays now that I have this digitally will highlight the issue.

That’s true, and the ravens aren’t nearly as powerful unless you get them out and running in the first round.

The killdeer / gull have other equivalents too, like the draw two / keep one water birds.

And there is so much other power in that game that skewed the score - the Puffin was worth 16 points on his own (8 for bird and 8 for bonus card).

The main reason we mulligan ravens in two player is because the person with the raven can essentially ignore the bird feeder, which leaves only one person pulling from it, making it hard to get.

It is also WAY less of a problem when you have the European Expansion… that is hands down the best addition to the game. Changes the pace, increases your options and just improves the overall feel.

Oceanic has some cool birds, but nectar has been a huge turnoff for us. We just grab the non-nectar birds and bundle with base + EE and play orig al board

I don’t know if it’s obvious from the app, but at the table there’s clearly many many more bird cards than you’ll ever see in a game. Perhaps that’s their way of mitigating broken combos, by ensuring they don’t randomly turn up that often

From my experience, getting a card-draw bird like Killdeer in a Forest or Plains habitat and ignoring the Water action is a strong enough strategy to win a lot of games without any other cards to combo with.

Good game team!

My favorite thing about the Decathlon tournament is being forced to learn games that one would never bother to try. I was initially skeptical of Wingspan, but it has rapidly become my favorite game. I’m almost obsessed at this point. (Caveat: obsession doesn’t necessarily lead to competence, LOL.) Anyone want to get another game going?

Yeah, count me in.

I’ll play too.

I’d like to play some more if there’s space available

Invites out to @geigerm, @Hardco, and @js619. :+1:t2:

We finished! Congrats to @Hardco on the win …

I’d like to play again if anyone’s up for it, and I promise not to make the mistake of playing on both my iPad and phone, which seems to royally screw up my notifications and cause many near-missed turns.

I’ll go again.

I flailed around a bit during the decathlon game but I’d like to give it another go.

GG @Hardco! Count me in for another game.

It didn’t make a difference, but I was curious why @js619 and I received 0 points for the “total birds” goal at the end of round 3. Everyone obviously had birds in play. Glitch?

I’ll play again too… and @doublebullout, I have no idea why that happened either. Maybe some strange scoring rule we’re unaware of?

I can’t see the game anymore, but I expect it was a tied goal that rounded down to 0.
