What are you playing?

I’m going to have to go back to it. I got frustrated after losing a mission 5 times in a row.

Are you doing the story campaign or the regular campaign (not sure what it’s called, but I think it’s based on the boardgame’s campaign)?

I am playing the Campaign which is the main implements version of the board game.

They have added some lower difficulty options as well to learn as you go. And there are a number of scenarios I have lost multiple times, but just keep avoiding

Anyone spotted anything that’s a good buy in the current Steam sale? Asking for @Neumannium and I.

I picked up Erannorth Chronicles, I liked Eraannorth Reborn. It is similar in some ways, but he needed to redo the engine I think so launched a new version.

I have a couple other things I am considering, Gloomhaven, Airport CEO and Siralim Ultimate.

Currently I’d say Monster Train, Battle Brothers, Wildermyth, Battlestar Galactic: Deadlock, Inscryption, and Phoenix Point, but am open to others.

I love Monster Train and Wildermyth. I hated Battle Brothers, which really surprised me. Phoenix Point is cool I guess, but I feel like it is missing something, it just lacks some character that Xcom has.

I’m considering Wildermyth, Field of Glory 2, and Fallout 4: GOTY version, but on Fanatical, where they’re cheaper. Urtuk: The Desolation looks very cool, and there are several small $5 games I might snag.

That Erannoth looks interesting, picking it up!

Gloomhaven is amazing. I am 90 hours and and have done 35 scenarios completed. The campaign is like 95 secanrios!

Erannoth is great, and the dev is super active and always adding things.

Erannorth you bastards, Erannorth. Steam looked at me blankly for five minutes while I tried every other spelling.

Hehe, it did that to me too!

Auto fill in the blanks worked with Er…

Okay, so, lightened my wallet a little on sales this year with

  • Gaia Project
  • Erannorth Chronicles
  • the Dungeon Beneath

If you are looking for something else, I have got a lot of mileage this year with

  • Gloomhaven
  • Gordon’s Quest
  • Across the Obelisk
  • Wildermyth
  • Trials of Fire
  • Monster Train (take or leave the DLC)
  • Pathfinder Wrath if the Righteous (though bounced out at 20 hours because I couldn’t get game session long enough and found it tedious rebuffing for the fights)

Gordon’s Quest

Now I know you’re winding me up.

Gordian Quest

Gordian Quest is still EA, which I am usually on the fence about buying. How complete is it? I guess same question with Across the Obelisk?

Hmm, there is no “end game”, but the campaigns are 3/4 of the way through.

Good point on EA, forgot about that. I am up to the point on both where I have played until current end, love the system and style, and will pause until they hit release

Is Wildermyth that good? I’m circling around it–and it looks very different–but I’m still on the fence. Looks like something my teenage kids might like, though.

Has anyone played Book of Travels? That looks fascinating.

Wildermyth is a tactical RPG, with randomized story telling that creates unique flavored characters (for instance deciding if you should drink from a well could result in a permanent change to your character) with Xcom style tactical battles, an overworld strategic map you need to control and a unique magic system.

Don’t let the charming graphics fool you, I think there is a lot of depth and replayability.

I only regret that I have game buying ADD, and am not playing more of this. My biggest gaming regret of 2021 is not spending more time with that game.

Thank you, that sounds great! I appreciate the review.

Subnautica: Below Zero is on sale 33% on steam (and PS4/5) so about 20-ish Euros.

Why mention this game? I finished Subnautica yesterday and boy did I have a blast.

First Person Survival/Crafting?
In the future??
Under Water???
With an actual story and definite ending???

Need I say more? I am not a survival fan, aside from fumbling around in No Man Sky and Valheim I am not too keen on this genre. Well here comes Covid and Sony giving away 10 games at the beginning of the pandemic in their stay-at-home initiative (remember when “stay at home” wasn’t a reason to start rioting and looting around town?)
I played 70 hours of Subnautica on PS5 and while a more focused player can easily beat the game within 30 hours or so I don’t mind at all. Spend too much time on resource gathering and base building but had fun with it. The story was decent, if not a bit too tongue-in-cheek-ish regarding big evil corporations but it was serviceable and other things I won’t spoil here kept me interested enough to go for completion.
Needless to say, I bought Subnautica: Below Zero the DLC-turned-seperate-product the moment Subnautica rolled Credits, and I am having a blast. Tweaks on some recipes, new recipes, new biomes, mechanics, and a general more polished look will surely string me along until the end as well.

Favourite Quote from Subnautica:

This ecological biome matches 7 of the 9 preconditions for stimulating terror in humans.

Yeah right, they weren’t kidding. My heart raced a couple of times when I played that game. I hate Horror games and movies but the horror elements in this game were ok in my book…still scared me nearly to death a couple of times…

Edit:
Oh, and you can get both Subnautica Games for 35€ on Steam right now as a bundle. While they aren’t perfect games I find the value for money in this pretty impressive.
