The Actual Table

I can swing that.

After weeks of losing at TFM, I finally got a win, much to the horror of my opponent, who thought a win was assured. As Philares, I didn’t get a lot out of my corp’s adjacency bonus, but I did put together an enormous plant engine that greened Mars nicely. Doing so I shoved him out of the running for Estate Dealer, and picked up Benefactor into the bargain. He had me beat in every other respect, but I won by 25 points, thanks to the greeneries and map domination, which scored me 50+ points alone. I confused Desert Settler for Polar Explorer, and should have funded it and got myself another 5 points. Never mind.

Tyrants is still a core game for us, and we played it four times in a row. Two wins, a draw, and a loss for me. We kept the Drow deck in and cycled through the others. I had a narrow win with Dragons thanks to a large troop-spunking strategy, a big win with Demons because I changed my strategy to suit the deck, a troop-heavy stalemate with the Undead, and a clear loss with Aberrations because my opponent wised up and promoted his default deck ASAP. This game needs another ten or twenty decks.

I own Tyrants and I’m dying to get it on the table, but it always gets supplanted by other 4-player games.

It’s great. I want to buy the new edition merely because it exists.

If you love Clank in Space, you will probably really like Clank in Space Adventures: Pulsarcade, the expansion that takes you back to the 1980s…though in space.

Occasionally, I’ll host some 2-player or 3-4 player games of Titan, because the design may be old but it’s still rock solid.

I have this Valley Games version. I also still play it on ACTS regularly. Great mix of strategy and luck. The zoomed in battles don’t matter as much as what happens on the main board, but they are still fun and interesting to play. Hopefully that 3rd or 4th person won’t mind watching the battle that doesn’t involve them.

I love Titan! Haven’t played it in ages (I think about 5 years ago at a convention)

I’ve only played the digital version but did enjoy it. The board game looks like an all night affair?

It really depends. 2-player, it can last an hour or possibly four, if both players are canny and strategic. With four players, yes, an all-night affair, but an enjoyable one, definitely a different item on the menu.

I do love the IOS version and wish it had been ported to Steam and/or BGA.

Imagine if you will, a world where North Korea is a capitalist world of fantasy and good old healthy bribes, and South Korea is a communist utopia filled with the bounty of the proletarian revolution.

With my opponent as the US, I had a healthy, if slow start, spreading into Asia, and was rudely shoved out of the Middle East. Thankfully, the US spent some of the Early War spreading through Central and South America, and took their eye off the ball elsewhere, and despite some nice African domination, lost control of Europe and Asia. I went from having no luck with the space race, to being unable to fail, which was fundamental to my success. 20 point win in turn 7.

On the flipside, I lost four out of five games of Slip Strike, which, up against a new player, is not great.

And yet on the third hand, I won both games of Rhino Hero Super Battle.

Wonder why.

This weekend was a birthday weekend for a grognard that had moved out of town. Waking up to the rooster, the cows mewling in the field, and our side of the Milky Way being visible key across the night sky. That left a big impression. I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to Orion’s Belt being upside down, but it’s flat earthier kryptonite.

So we played:

All bridges burning. A 3 player coin game that improves on the formula in an irreversible way that you won’t understand until you play it.

Space empires 4x. Which compresses every future universe idea you’ve ever had into an easy to learn and cohesive whole. That is, if your vision of the future involves regular combat.

1848 showed how the rail network in south east Australian might develop, but how the Bank of England can still turn a comfortable profit.

Finally, the space Corp expansion has some (one?) wildly unbalanced race, but is absolutely an improvement on the base game.

It’s been a while for a Storm Above the Reich after action report, so here’s #14 in my campaign.

Things are looking promising!

Don’t know if anybody here is a fan of Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition, but this announcement of three expansions coming is music to this fan’s ears.

Posted my review of Ark Nova today.

Damn, what a great game!

Thanks for posting! That game sounds awesome!

As an old-school Magic: the Gathering collector/player, I am a sucker for a game with intriguing card play. I also love the hybrid games that give us some euro game mechanics melded with a whole bunch of cards.

My wish list is excruciatingly long so I often buy and play games based on whether or not I’ll actually be able to play them, and this game, unfortunately, might be a little difficult to get to the table in my current situation. Still, it has my interest to be sure.

It is great, but my wife has bounced pretty hard as a two player game. She prefers TFM and Wingspan.

Main issue is the scoring system, she gets frustrated when she builds a cool looking and awesome zoo, but ends with a negative score.

Psychology driven, I know, but that means it now collects dust in the cupboard

I can see that, and one reason I wasn’t sure about how it worked with 2.

Thanks for the input! I’ll definitely keep that in mind if I ever think of getting it for me and my wife.

My friend reckons it works well as a solitaire game. He says it’s 95% gameplay with minimal bot upkeep

I posted Mission #15 in my Storm Above the Reich campaign. One more mission in the Middle 1943 season and we’re getting close to outright victory!
