Got some time with the Azul expansion, Slip Strike, Star Wars Risk, Jekyll vs Hyde, Terraforming Mars, and came back home to find evidence of my past crimes waiting for me.
Now to find even more sleeves, and recruit more players for Unfathomable. Got Hannibal tomorrow.
Sounds like a great time!
What is Pocket Dragons and why am I finding next to no info online?
It’s a fighting game KS that juuuuust delivered. And it’s Pocket Paragons so if you’re searching for Pocket Dragons there may be little to find…
Hahahaha…I’m an idiot. I’ve been reading to my kids for an hour and I think my eyes have gone screwy.
I promise, I can read…
Hannibal: Rome vs Carthage? YUM!
Can’t wait for you to report back about Unfathomable. I love games with traitors and hidden loyalties.
Asmodee are doing a fund raiser for the breast cancer research foundation. Boxes cost $5 with $2 going to the charity. It’s a nice box of pink components for ticket to ride. Could make a good stocking stuffer if they ship in time.
Latest arrivals.
Shamans is an interesting mix of hidden roles and trick-taking.
Days of Ire is a really solid co-op but I prefer it as a 1 vs all. I picked it up when it was first Kickstarted and bounced off it, promptly sold it. Having played it again recently, I’ve decided I do in fact want my own copy. Pet peeve is euro size sleeves were recommended, but are too large. Standard USA size sleeves are a perfect fit. I have 300 euro sleeves and maybe 3 SUSA sleeves. Arseholes.
Gunkimono I’ve not played yet but it’s got a good rep and it was cheap as chips.
Nothing quite like getting the bile out.
^^^Small World
Edit: I shouldn’t say I don’t “see the appeal.” The concept is amazing on paper. The game continually fails to entertain me, though.
Small World is a very brittle design that, as you say, looks good on paper. The app is great and I’ll play now and again. But the central design mechanic would need an overhaul before I could really give it another look.
Hunted it for a while. Ended up getting it cheap after all. Probably the last copy in the country from what I can see.
Caused some minor arguments in my group after we played New Angeles and Unfathomable this week. Apart from being BSG veterans, they also love to complain, about the length and it not being BSG respectively, and resented my politely informing them they could get fucked. We had a really good time with New Angeles, and while running the city itself is basic, the overlay of betrayal from the traitor and additional incentives that make other players look like betrayers, means the game quickly gets messy. I don’t find criticisms of the length unwarranted, and I can’t quite figure out why it takes so long, but I find it hard to complain myself when BSG will also stretch to epic lengths. Unfathomable was a tighter experience, and there are more ways to alert resources, which makes the game more volatile. Glad I got it, despite it, incredibly, not being BSG.
I was never a fan of BSG despite it being a totally competent design. I’m curious about Unfathomable, but I’m wary of the traitor mechanic in games.
Please let us know how The Expanse boardgame is. I haven’t played Englestein’s other games, but I adored his Versailles 1919 with Mark Herman and I’m looking forward to their Triumvir.
Unfathomable is just BSG with the rough points sanded down. It’s got some interesting tweaks though.
The Expanse is a solid effort and, despite feeling a little bloodless and calculating, is a great alternative to COIN if you want a shorter, lighter game, or players like the theme. It’s a high level strategy game, fleet movements and area majority, and you have to spend VP to buy cards from a market, and in classic CDG style, use them for their event or action points. The faction turn order is also interlocked with the cards, and the whole game is like a cleverly remixed COIN title.
I’ve not used all the modules of the expansion before, but the parts I have used, all improve the game. New technologies randomise development, a new system makes the Protomolecule far more prominent, and there are extra resources and leaders. Now I’ve got my own expansion I’m going to go through them all in short order.
I freaking hate BSG. I don’t like the theme, the setting, the meta gaming and table dominance.
Might be the people I played with, but it ranks as my worst table top gaming experience ever.
This is music to my ears. I love BSG but my wife hates it due to the rough points, so it never comes out. Well, ok, I love certain things about BSG and forgive its flaws and am ok with the length because it’s not like there are many other games I’d rather be playing.
If you played with loud, dominant people who all shout everyone else down, that would be nightmarish. If you play with devious strategists who quietly observe and then start accusing at just the right time, it’s pretty strong.
That’s a huge if. I agree, it probably works better with certain groups, but I’d rather not take the chance.
