After a month where I was feeling some kind of depression or blahs or whatever, the final installment of the Top 100 BGG games is up. #10-1!!!
FWIW, I had assumed you’d been placed into some sort of Canadian super-soldier program (were you?).
Sssshhhhh…we can’t talk about that.
Besides, a Canadian super-soldier program would just create a soldier who’s super nice and apologetic.
In the past I’ve given advice to friends and family that if you are waiting for the wisest time to have children then you will never have children because they will always be disruptive and require sacrifice no matter how perfect your life may or not be. But they are worth is when you are ready.
I’m pretty sure the same logic applies to board games.
I so much want to play this game…
The rulebook is an actual warcrime but there are a ton of files on BGG to make up for it.
Finally got Root Underworld to the table, and I find myself very very pleased with it. Breaking it in we played Duchy vs Marquise, and competent cat play saw the moles defeated in detail, outfought and the cats easily scored a Dominance victory. Swapping sides, I attacked as the cats, taking a big aggressive pincer movement that crushed the moles into a corner and halved their forces. Moles gonna mole, and they literally tunneled out of that corner to come up in a clearing next to my keep, well behind my front lines, and begin to churn out ministers in a serious way. Playing on the lake map, I managed one decisive strike, a raft-borne commando raid to wipe out a mole force, destroy one of their citadels, and make them lose a minister. Luckily he had another three, and I promptly lost.
I note that both times, playing the new faction first meant that player lost, which I’d expect. Very happy with both of the new factions, and the lake map and random clearing assignment is a very nice addition. We used the Exiles & Partisans deck for all four games, which was a lovely change; to my delight it gave me Tunnels when I was up against the moles, and to my horror gave me Corvid Planners when I was playing as the Corvids. An ideal expansion.
I’d really like to find - quickly - a WWII game that is easy to learn and plays 3. Of now WWII, then other historical conflicts. I can’t stress the easy to learn part enough, though.
Also, are there any good ways to play Memoir ‘44 with 3?
Quartermaster General.
That would break the universe.
Unless something has radically changed, it’s pretty much the most two-player game ever.
It’s good with 3? I look at BGG for these things and it says 80% not recommended for 3-player. But I trust anyone here more than BGG.
I think that’s because at 3 it’s a 1 vs 2 set up. If you’re okay with that (more experienced vs two noobs is how we did it) then it’s fine. And it’s super easy to learn.
Does the single player have to play two roles (like have two separate hands of cards)? I’m fine with 1v2 but I’m not a fan of games where I need to play as two separate people.
Never mind, I read the rule. Still, the gameplay itself seems simple enough that maybe playing multiple countries isn’t that problematic.
Black Orchestra. Yay or nay?
Quite good!
Because I’m totally out of topics to write about (but mostly because the Top 100 BGG Games posts were so popular), I’ve decided to look at the #200-101 games ranked on BGG.
I’ve done two of the posts so far.
Check them out and let me know what you think?
I really liked the Quartermaster General suggestion but I’ve held off for now. I’m going camping with some buddies I only see once a year and we only have about 24 hours together. I went with Black Orchestra simply because it plays easier with our number and cooperative games tend to be a little easier to teach since you can often discuss it on the fly.
Playing a lot of Kingdomino and Jaipur lately with my wife. Fun and quick games.
And working tru the Undaunted:Normandy campaign (scenario 7/12) and some 7 Wonders: Duel with a friend. Really liking Undaunted. Think Undaunted: North Africa will also be bought in the future. Hear even better things about U:NA then U:N.
Also started a new game of Pandemic Legacy with my wife and 2 friends. I completed it about 1,5 year ago, but the others havent played it earlier. Still a classic, even on a second playttru.
Also eagerly awaiting my copy of Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion to arive. Havent played any Gloomhaven yet.
