GG Codington and @JMH.75! I could just not get anything going.
Thanks and GG to you both - it was a nail biting finish!
This was a big win for me in many ways, particularly because it was only my second win in 12 online games apparently!
The other significant thing in my opinion was that this was proof that you can win without a massive war/aggression strategy - I tried to stay close or in the lead for military, but more as a deterrent and instead I mainly focused on science and mines… and it obviously paid off!
FWIW, scores before the final 5 events were:
@Codington 141
@JMH.75 129
@kennfusion 85
In terms of humble pie, I will say that I did try to win big in a War over Culture at the very end when my strength advantage over JMH was 45 to 28… only to learn that a single Air Force unit could add 13 strength to his military!
It drives me a little crazy that in such a well-made game the Air Force effect is not printed on the card. It’s a little baffling why not, and doubly baffling that they can’t add some text in the app.
Yeah, even some kind of iconography would be helpful. Then again, I feel like it’s kind of on me that I apparently have never tapped on the card in the game to read the “fine print”.
Table 4
@SpiceTheCat got himself in a tough spot, losing around 6 population to dual War on Territories, and unhappy citizens left him in revolution. Once @HostileApostle elected Gandhi their fates were sealed, as winning by War on Culture was probably his best shot at that point. So instead I took all of SpiceTheCat’s culture!
Thank god that’s over. A miserable experience, especially having to repeatedly log in to press the “concede” button, and being in a death spiral with apparently no way out. Some games I enjoy despite being bad at them (Wingspan, Fort Sumter), but I hate TtA and it hates me.
No reflection meant on @Hardco and @HostileApostle, who played the game how it should be played, and congrats to both
I enjoyed the game. As stated, this is not my favorite game either. I usually do something to stall my engine out at some point during the game. My planning was a little better this game, but @Hardco proved too tough! GG guys!
Table 1 complete, gg @Baelnor and @feederofgoats!
I was actually able to get a military up and running for once (feels like that never happens), along with some passive culture from early theaters. Then had a nice payday with the Hollywood wonder on the last turn.
Fun game, thanks all.
Well played folks! Very close for second place. This is usually my best game but I really struggled to get any decent combos going. Everything was just average… but I was saved by Gaudi in Age 2. He got me a lot of points.
Voting for Game 9 is underway! Please do your best to rank all the games as it will potentially have an impact on the final tally. Run-off will be held if there is no clear winner beyond the 5th choice.
You can follow the results here:
I was all in on Olympic guy…. But then it was last round!
Nice game all
Well played … I didn’t get anything going culture-wise until it was way too late, and by the time I established my military advantage, all I could do was declare one war on poor JHTaube.
Glad y’all enjoyed.
I will play Civilization. I will play Agricola. Somehow the rhythm of Through the Ages just eludes me.
It can be a fun game and challenge if you don’t completely fail to get off the ground! At it’s worst, it’s one of the few games that this group seems to agree merits resigning rather than suffering.
Nice win, Mike!
@Notsew12345 Geez, you weren’t kidding when you said Through the Ages was a game you didn’t have to learn. Thanks for getting things wrapped up on time this time too!
