Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun

Shadow tactics is a hard core tactical stealth game set in Japan around the Edo period. You control 5 specialists with extraordinary skills. Your task is to infiltrate enemy bases with a lot of guards and cleverly distract them, take them down and hide the bodies before moving to the next target. It isn’t turn based, but I read somewhere you can pause the game to sync actions of your specialists.

Remember Commandos: Behind enemy lines or Desperados? This game is like that.
It will release 6 December, but you can try it yourself by playing the demo on steam or gog. I just played it an half hour and I really like it. I think it is the kind of game you guys would also like, so give it a try.

Let me know if you like this game or can we expect a review?

The game is out.
With €40 a rather high price, but bought it anyway to support the devs and hoping to see more games like it. There is a 10% discount until December 13th.

Will check in later this week to share my opinion about it.

Pretty keen. Let us know how it goes!

@Jules

If you get time … any quick word on how well you like the game?

It does look beguiling …

I really like the game, but I don’t have a lot of free time to play at the moment.

I am half way in the 3rd level. The first 2 demo levels come first in the full version.
What I like the most is how you work your way tru a mission. At first it seems impossible. But then you see a weak point in their defence. And from there on you start eliminating enemies towards the objectives.
You can also sync actions in shadow mode.
For example you hide two characters in the bushes. Enter shadow mode to set up their actions and with a press on the key they act simultaneously killing one guard while distracting another.

The game is engaging. When I stopped playing I was still thinking about what steps to try next time I would play.

It has 3 difficulties. Easy is a bit too easy if your familiar with this kind of games, medium is engaging and hard is, well, hard. It also has some replay value by trying to collect medals or playing on a higher difficulty. Two examples for a medal is to kill 2 guards with a rock or 1 guard with an ox. You can also fullfill the missions without killing anybody, but that is even harder but not impossible.

You can press h to highlight stuff on the map you can interact with. The rock I mentioned before can be pushed when 2 guards walk underneath it. So I drew their attention with a bird flute (a ability from one character) and when they came i pushed the rock. Other guards think it is an tragic accident and aren’t alerted. Civilians do their work around the guards. If they spot you they run and warn the guards. But you can knock them unconscious and drag them somewhere else.

I havent played with all 5 characters. You cant choose which characters you get for a level, so I havent seen them all yet. The characters are different enough to keep things interesting.

I certainly recommend this game, but if your in doubt try the demo first. The overall user review on steam is: overwhelmingly positive. Based on 795 reviews.
