I love Temple Gates’ digital version of Race for the Galaxy so much that I’m sure you’re tired of hearing about it. Hell, I’m tired of hearing about it. That’s tough, though, because not only is Race for the Galaxy my current front-runner for Game of the Year, today it got better. Late last night, version 1.02 landed on the App Store and it plugs up the few holes that were remaining from the initial launch.
The first, and possibly most pressing, issue fixed by the update involves notification badges. You know, those little red circles that appear on your app icons, letting you know that there’s something inside waiting for you. For example, my Gmail icon currently has one that says 1,211, and now I want to jump off a bridge. These badges weren’t popping up in previous versions of RftG, meaning that while your device would tell you when it was your turn, if you missed that pop-up you’d have no idea a turn was waiting unless you opened the app. No more!
The next big addition are stats. I don’t really care all that much about wins and losses, but they’re offering so much more than that. You can filter on how many players, which expansions and rules were in effect and more. You can even filter on whether the game was won via a full tableau or an empty VP pile. You can even tap on one of the game scores and it will open the game so you can see what the table looked like at game’s end.
What else? We have device linking, which means you can now link devices to one account and play your games on all your devices. Timers have been added to multiplayer games so you can kick slow players like myself out of games when we take days to respond (yes, I’m aware I do it!). They’ve also bumped up how many friends you can have in your friend list and how many games you can have going at one time.
This update was supposed to land next week when the PC version of Race for the Galaxy goes live. That version will be for PC on Steam, but you can download the mobile version for iOS and Android today.
