With Marvel Cosmic Invasion releasing I was thinking about how fun it would be for me to take a trip down memory lane and play it with my kids and tell them about the glorious days of playing beat-em-ups in the arcade. I was then thinking about other side-scrolling beat-em-ups that we could play together like Scott Pilgrim and TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, and then I remembered Dragon’s Crown…
Dragon’s Crown could have been a masterpiece. In fact, it should have been a masterpiece. It had amazing graphics, great side-scrolling action, multiple unique characters, and RPG progression. But the art design was beyond the pale. I think the character design killed that game, and it is one that I can honestly say I would be embarrassed to have someone walk in on me playing.
Once I went down this rabbit hole of thought, I remembered the existence of Tanto Cuore. I’ve ever played it at the table, but the app was something I didn’t really need people seeing me play, so I’d imagine busting the cards out at a convention would be a bit embarrassing.
This is kind of tongue-in-cheek and I realize there are plenty of ways to run with the prompt. “I’m a real gamer and I’d be embarrassed if someone saw me playing Catan,” is certainly one way to go with the question, but there are plenty of goofy games out there across digital and cardboard that you maybe don’t want to be caught playing.
No idea what you mean about Dragon’s Crown. Seems perfectly legit.
Barbarossa | Board Game | BoardGameGeek has got to be up there, for multiple reasons. A friend of mine bought a copy and was mid-way through explaining what it was when he realised just how cringe the entire thing was and packed it away. Never saw it again.
I’m going to give this question way more thought than I probably should–after all, who needs to work while they’re at work?–but can’t think of anything I’ve played that’s embarrassing because of the artwork.
That said, I’d be embarrassed to be caught playing anything I “found” in a F2P ad. I don’t always pay to remove ads in free to try games. I have occasionally watched an ad, thought “that looks kind of fun,” and downloaded the game. I have a couple of those games on my phone right now, in a folder called “Dumb Games.” I feel dumb playing them, but sometimes I just want to turn off my brain and mindlessly tap colorful icons and see what happens.
I will never feel embarrassed to be caught playing Catan. I still suggest it at game nights and still love it and always will : ) It is probably the board game I have played most in my life. I don’t know why it has a bad rap these days.
The game I did play with some regularity for maybe a year that I would not be caught ever playing again was the Highlander ccg. I’ve tried and liked a lot of tcgs and cgs over the years, and something caught on with me about this game, and then one day I realized that it was a terrible game based on a terrible TV show and that was the end of that : )
If you’re reading this card as saying that a reporter starts asking questions, preventing you from having a deadly sword fight, yes, that’s the Highlander ccg. Lots of long swords, penetrating wounds, and the main resources were Endurance and Exhaustion, thus making every turn sound sexual. Great stuff.
Anything Harry Potter. Which is mostly okay; I’m not attached to HP stuff generally, and, while it was a way to connect with my children’s literature-loving father, he doesn’t game.
Similarly, I have a copy of A Study In Emerald which I’ve never played, and maybe never will, now.
I suppose I would actually be kind of embarrassed to play Catan, but only because I have so very old an edition that I think it isn’t even compatible with any of the newer expansions.
