Decathlon 2022 Preparation

I’m afraid I’m unfamiliar with nearly all of these besides N Hex. Would any be fun and appropriate for a separate tourney after the decathlon? That ought to be a factor in the selection so that we get the most bang for the buck.

@doublebullout - I’ve played almost all of these async and, while I naturally like some better than others, I’ll be happy to see any of them join the Decathlon.

@Mirefox - I’m still with you on Root but I find it hard to disqualify a good functional async game from the list just because of the asymmetric design.

I think one solution to both of your concerns is to do two votes - one to pick a top 5 or so from this list and another to pick from there. That should have the effect of “weeding out” the outliers and resulting in a better game taking the last spot.

I only know a couple of the games on the list, so looked them up on BGG to see if I could get any idea of which I might want to vote for. I put together this list of some BGG stats to help me pick my votes. Thought I would share if anyone else was curious.

It was helpful in that I probably would have just discounted a game like Fort Sumter just by the name of the game, except that a 1.8 complexity suggests that it might be easy to pick up and compete in. Whereas I have always wanted to try Root, and thought this might be a good time to commit to it, but at the highest complexity rating, perhaps not something I want now. But it is popular, so there is that too to consider if I am going to invest in new games. Anyway, hope this helps anyone.

BGG Overall Rank BGG Complexity BGG Rating
Concordia 21 3.01 8.1
Root 28 3.76 8.1
Evolution 343 2.77 7.5
Fort Sumter (1v1) 3970 1.8 6.5
Labyrinth: The War on Terror (1v1) 463 3.64 7.6
Isle of Skye 235 2.25 7.4
Yellow & Yangtze 702 3.13 7.9
Viticulture 32 2.89 8
Everdell 31 2.8 8.1
Istanbul 148 2.58 7.6
Indian Summer 1465 2.17 6.8

Ok, voting to pick the top 5 choices for Decathlon 2022 Game #10 is now open. This time around I would actually ask you to consider NOT voting for a game if you don’t know anything about it.

You are welcome to find some info (like perhaps the table @kennfusion so helpfully shared above!) and use that to help you make a decision, but blindly ranking based on no knowledge is not likely to go well for any of us. :stuck_out_tongue:

Here’s the ballot link and the results link.

Once a decent number of votes are in, I’ll post a run-off vote on the top 5 games.

@Codington Brief history is one of yours, is it not? Everything still functioning as it should?

Yeah I snuck that one in there, fully expecting it not to make the cut… :stuck_out_tongue:

As far as I know it’s still functioning though (played a test game with some friends not that long ago.)

I don’t really understand this voting system, but I put Viticulture last and it is still winning the vote, so obviously I’ve done something horribly wrong!

Fortunately it appears we can vote as often as we like, so hopefully subsequent votes will remedy this… :joy:

Sigh. Well folks unfortunately I can’t tell how many of the 21 sets of votes are legitimate but frankly I would be a little surprised if there has been a huge amount of “voter fraud” happening here. I’d like to think this community is more honest than most!

(Side note: I’m also extremely surprised that RCV123 doesn’t even have the most basic “one vote per IP” check in place. The best “security” mechanism they offer is to verify emails but even that would not prevent multiple votes. It makes the programmer in me cringe!)

However, I will also say that the top 5 has largely stayed the same since the first handful of votes were cast. So, I’m going to go ahead and run a regular SP poll here and trust that we will all be happy - these are all great games!

2022 Decathlon Game #10 Final Selection Rating

I know there are a couple of games in this list that people might want to vote “against”, so I’ve broken this up into 5 votes with step values.

NOTE: LOW SCORE WINS - vote low if you WANT to play the game, vote high if you DON’T

Ideally everyone picks a 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 vote but I can’t enforce that so do what feels right folks. I have faith in the community and the power of voting!

Hey @Codington are we calling this Concordia? If so, I would like to get a practice game or two in.

Patience, @kennfusion, patience.

I’m going to post one last call for votes to the main Decathlon thread now and call the results tomorrow.

Funny, I thought waiting 4 days was being patient…of course…I also think I am good at filtering the things that come into my head, but other people think I don’t filter so well.

I like to give these things a week since everyone’s availability and time on the site is different. I’d rather have to wait a little longer but give everyone a chance to join/vote/comment, etc.

Having made another “call to action” and since it would be nice to start practice games on the weekend, I’m okay with making the decision at the end of the day tomorrow or first thing Saturday.

Ok, 3P practice games of Concordia - I’m in, @kennfusion was in 3 days ago (:stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:) - who else wants to get a game in?

Maybe mention as well if you are just refreshing or if you’ve never played before so we can set up some appropriate practice tables.

Happy gaming!

I’ve never played Concordia, so I could definitely use some practice.

Im in

I could also use a practice game. Never played before, but I did take several years of Latin in high school. That should help, right?

Here’s a couple of “how to play” videos for Concordia:
