Darkest Dungeon set to explore the Color of Madness

It would shock you to learn how little I actually do around these parts [not really -ed.]. Sure, I’m the one writing up the blurbs you see on the front page, but the real work comes in tracking down these stories and that’s mainly done by everyone in our forums. They bust their backs to find cool stuff, then I steal it and report it like I stumbled on it all on my own. It’s a great system (for me) and really goes to show just how great our readers are…so far, they haven’t called me out on it. Today’s theft of a story is about one of my faves of 2017, Darkest Dungeon. New DLC is coming in Spring called The Color of Madness and it sounds even more Lovecraftian than regular Darkest Dungeon if you can believe it.

As you should be aware of from our award-winnng* review of Darkest Dungeon, it’s a really tough roguelike game that puts you in charge of recruiting, training, and sending adventurers off to their deaths in the hopes they can recover your ancestral home. You’re basically a huge ass, but you kind of like some of your adventurers, so when they die you’re legitimately upset, which makes you not a total monster.

The original game has a thick Lovecraft vibe already, but this new content takes it to another level:

Some hateful shard of alien origin has streaked through the night sky, crashing into the old Miller’s farm on the outskirts of the Hamlet! Those unfortunate enough to witness the Comet’s arrival have been blinded by what they can only describe as a shifting, ephemeral hue of damnably abrasive intensity. There has been no word from the farm in a fortnight, save for the unearthly groaning that echoes from the ruin of the mill…
You can almost see the Dunwich Horror growing out in the Whateley's barn. It's more than just a new story element, however, the new content will have a ton of new...um...content, hence the name "new content".
  • A New Quest Type: Get lost in time and space as you confront unending waves of enemies, new and old, pushing ever closer to the crash site of the Comet. Survive as long as you can stomach, and compare your highest kill count with friends and rivals alike!
  • A New Enemy Faction: The husks of the Miller and his farmhands roam the area around the windmill, spreading the all-consuming influence of the Comet’s light.
  • Powerful New Trinkets: Visit the Nomad Wagon and spend Comet Shards to purchase trinkets with new and powerful functionality.
Now, I haven't come close to finishing the original story of Darkest Dungeon and I have nearly 60 hours put into it. I did say it was hard. It's a good hard, though, and one of these days I'll crack it wide open and win, although I'm picturing a win in Darkest Dungeon will have some horrible repercussions that will temper my excitement. Still, having more places to explore with more baddies and especially more trinkets, is more than welcome.

The Color of Madness expansion should be coming to the PC/Mac/Linux version in Spring of 2018. As for Switch and iOS, first we need to get the other DLC, already available on Steam, The Shieldbreaker and The Crimson Court. The Switch release will have both the Shieldbreaker and Crimson Court available whenever it releases, whereas BlitWorks has started working on all the DLC for the iOS version, but we still don’t have a window as to when we can expect any of it to land on the App Store.

*no awards have been won, but my 12 year-old did call the review “pretty lit” which, I think, is a good thing.

Oh, magic. Literally.

Has anyone played Pixel Heroes on iOS? It looks a bit similar in play to Darkest Dungeon, but I’m not sure about it.

I’ve played Pixel Heroes. It has slightly less depth than a wafer-thin mint.
