I don’t think it’s much of a secret that Factorio has been (and still is) one of my favorite video games of all time. The open-endedness, seemingly endless research tracks, and mind-twisting efforts to crank just a little more efficiency out of what’s turned into a bowl of spaghetti are, apparently, what I’m looking for in a game as I turn into a grumpy old man. It doesn’t end with Factorio, though. I’ve always loved city-builders and simulations that allow you to create something amazing from a blank slate. Today a new challenger to the throne arrives from the one-man dev house, Codebyfire, called The Colonists.

The Colonists puts you in charge of cute, Wall-E-esque bots tasked with building a settlement on a new planet where they can live free of Earthly biases and explore their sentience. It’s got all the stuff you’d expect in a game like this: resource collection, technology tracks, exploration, etc. and that’s all I really needed to hear to add it to my Steam library.

The Colonists is a settlement building game inspired by classic titles like The Settlers and the Anno series.

You take control of a team of self-replicating robots who have escaped from Earth and are searching the galaxy for a new home where they can fulfil their dream: to be human.

Harvest natural resources, set up farming and food production, create expeditions to discover new lands and research new technologies.

Harvest natural resources, set up farming and food production, conquer other settlements or trade with new allies. Explore, research, manage, tweak and refine to your heart’s content!

With two separate mission tracks, The Colonists lets either you create sprawling settlements in peace or race to compete against AI colonies in military winner-takes-all scenarios.

Explore, research, manage, tweak and refine to your heart’s content!

See? I told you it sounded cool.

As I mentioned, The Colonists is the work of one guy, Richard Wallis, and it’s being published by Mode 7, who you might know as the developers of Frozen Synapse 1 & 2. If there’s a downside to The Colonists it’s the current platforms available. Windows. That’s it. Checking to see if we’ll at least see it for Mac in the future but, for now, Windows is the only option. Bootcamp it is!
