My wife and I really enjoyed Silo. I saw the ātwistā coming but was then surprised by further reveals. I wonāt say much about the show other than the fact that I enjoyed it.
Did you read the books? They were some of my favorites but Iām having a hard time getting into the showā¦
No, but I want to now.
The books are good, particularly the first one. Like @js619 I also have had a hard time getting into the show. I donāt know if itās the feel of it or the pacing, the acting? Unlike, for example GoT, which was exciting to see on screen after reading the books, this just felt like I was watching out of obligation almost.
My exact sentiments
Late to the Severance (Apple TV+) party.
LOVED this. The dystopian aspect, the futuristic yet retro combo, and the mystery of the whole thing. Had to stop and walk away from the last two episodes a few times because they were so tense.
Reminded me a little of the best parts of Westworld (HBO) first season meets Homecoming (Prime).
Looking forward to S2, certainly.
The Bear S2. More of the same only better.
Spy Among Friends. I resent the pandering to plebs with the inclusion of an obvious working class plant, but I love Guy Pearce as the supremely jaded British Marxist spy and consummate traitor, while Damian Lewis is just as good as perhaps his last remaining friend. Bonus Adrian Edmondson.
Zom 100. Saw where this was going early on, but am still here for it. When your job is a nightmare, the zombie apocalypse is a relief.
My wife and I just finished season 2 of Yellowstone and Iām not sold on the hype. The show is overly-dramatic and it is almost laughable how many bad situations ever character finds themselves in constantly. It is hard to like any of the characters. The show also butchers both medicine and the law, which really makes it difficult for a medical professional and a lawyer to watch together. Iāll never understand why shows canāt find a consultant for their professional jargon and procedure. Heck, Iāll do it, and for cheap!
Itās an entertaining show, and they do manage to manufacture tension, but it isnāt great and if I had never watched it I doubt I would have missed much. We will continue to watch but Iām not going to gush about the show and recommend it to everyone.
What do you do if your time travel storyās protagonist is a moron?
In Tokyo Revengers, we get to find out. Rapidly wearing through my patience.
I know Iām late to the show, but I just started watching Silo. Only at Episode 2 so far. Havenāt seen anything in a while so captivating. Hope it stays that good till the end.
Anyone read the books? Would you say theyāre still worth reading after watching the show? Reviews on Amazon and Audible seem quite mixed as far as I can tell
Interesting. I felt the same as you and quite liked the series. There are some book readers here that werenāt as positive on the show having had read the books first. I also want to read the books now.
The books are some of my favorites of all time; I must have read and reread them twenty times if once.
I couldnāt abide the show - they threw crap in that wasnāt in the book, made up romances and tension points that didnāt exist in the books and frankly imho didnāt need to be included to move the show along.
Made it to e4 or so before giving up.
Highly recommend the books though.
Itās funny, because shows like Wheel of Time and Rings of Power throw me into a blind rage over how they bastardize the source material that I love but then if I havenāt read a particular book I can still enjoy the show, even knowing it is doing to other what the aforementioned do to me. Maybe I should give the shows that destroy the IPs I love some slack for being better for a general audience? Nope! Screw Amazon!
I can relate to that regarding game of thrones. I loved the books, read them multiple times, but could not like the show. I started a few times, as everyone around me was trying to convince me of what I presumably missed, only to stop each time after a few episodes because I couldnāt enjoy it. In contrast , I enjoyed the Harry Potter and LotR movies although liked the books.
I read Silo when it came out, years ago, and liked it and remembered it well enough to not be able to like the show very much. I made it just two or three episodes.
I also read GoT prior to the show but for some reason had less issues with the show. As I recall, they stayed pretty true to the first book for the first season, then started to slowly move farther and farther from the book material, and for some reason that worked for me. If theyād gone full force in S1 to diverge from the book, Iād have been put off, Iām sure. That RR doesnāt seem capable of putting out new books also helped me feel more excited about the show.
Feel the same as you about the HP and LotR books/movies, and still rewatch/reread them.
To @Mirefox 's point, Wheel of Time and Rings of Power are just bad shows. I had fewer issues with their patting the source material on the head and telling it to go wait in the other room while they made a TV show. My issues were, in both cases, āThis show is just not very good at all.ā Whereas with Silo, I donāt think itās a bad show necessarily.
Looks like everyone has positive reviews of the Silo books (if not the series) so it looks like Iāve found my next audiobook series to listen to on my hikes. Finished all of the First Law books. Overall it was pretty good. I donāt read much fantasy. Iām not sure how I felt about a grimdark fantasy setting moving into the dawn of the industrial age and capitalism in the final trilogy. The horrible working conditions of the average person and the greed of the rich certainly fits the āgrimdarkā theme and maybe Abercrombie wanted to push the current feelings of income inequality into his series but I didnāt find the final trilogy as satisfying as the first.
I had never heard of the source books before watching the first episode of Silo. I was immediately hooked and loved the series. The cast and performances were outstanding (with the notable exception of Common, who was pretty bad IMO.) If reading the books will make me frustrated with the series, Iāll probably just pass on them until the series is finished.
I just watched S1E1 and was happy enough to be excited about the series. Itās certainly a return to form after some the of the newer shoes.
Does anyone think Picard is worth a watch?
