The Glass Teat, or 'Television'

I should have given Billions a proper chance ages ago. Giamatti has me rapt, knocking out a fantastic performance. Some epic bitterness on display, not to mention spite and hatred. Particularly enjoyed the way everyone knows the stock market is openly corrupt.

Great show, love everything about it. Have yet to see the latest season, as it’s one of the ones the wife and I watch together

Just finished Norsemen season 3. Hilarious stuff. If you like the dry humor of mocumentaries like What We Do In The Shadows you can’t miss this Vikings spoof.

Lower Decks. At last, a good Star Trek series. Genuinely funny, and feels vaguely transgressive throughout.

Lovecraft Country. A good if unsubtle start. I hope the series has more of a through line than the book, but it has some good acting and production so I’ll be happy regardless.

Teenage Bounty Hunters. Incredibly fun. Excellent chemistry between the two leads sells the whole thing.

Away. Was hoping for more competence porn, like The Martian. Instead, the science is not careful, the characters seem ineffective, often making bafflingly foolish and heavily telegraphed choices, and it’s mostly about the family dramas. Not horrible, but hard to care about.

I tried Another Life and was not gripped, and Away was worse. Disappointing.

Twice Upon a Time on Netflix (or “Il Ă©tait une seconde fois”, its original French title). Four episode French-language drama focused around limited-window time travel (6 months in this case). Very strong writing, excellent acting all around. Lots of nice subtleties and tension in this with some clever narrative and structural twists.

3% is riveting! Enjoying all the foreign language shows on Netflix

Yeah, we just started season 2 of Dark and love it so far.

Fargo S4 is a bit more out there than previous seasons, but it’s still the same quality. Nothing else quite like it, in terms of style, distinctive cast, you name it. Effortless class.

Warrior. This keeps me going watching minorities slap each other around. Restores my faith in the human race so it does. Good scraps.

The End of the Fucking World. I was dreading the second series of this, as I thought the first ended conclusively and perfectly. I’m happy to say the second series is more of the wonderful, awkward chemistry I adore between Alex Lawther and Jessica Barden. Its writing is top notch, and it speaks about love in a way you don’t see often.

The Queen’s Gambit.

Does a respectable job of representing high level chess play. Kasparov was a consultant and I’ve seen several videos where players are breaking down the moves made in some of the games.

Anya Taylor Joy keeps getting better in each film I see her in.

Does it actually get into the chess? I really enjoyed the book, but after the first episode of this it looked to me like they weren’t going to bother actually following the chess, which seems counterproductive.

It felt to me like they focused more on chess and less on her personal issues as the series went on. And the first episode was her childhood. so a much younger actor was in the lead role.

For those that have Apple TV+, you should definitely check out Ted Lasso. Easily my favorite season of TV to come out of 2020.

My wife and I finished the first season of Cobra Kai and loved it. I wasn’t sure what to expect but it has a little of everything with quite a few laughs, especially from Johnny, who is stuck in the 80s and not even remotely politically correct. Fun show!

Based on this recommendation we have been working our way through this the past week. Episodes of 1-3 of season 2 last night. Love this show!
