The Glass Teat, or 'Television'

Let’s put it this way: I watched it all the way through. I enjoyed it. It was also one of the slowest and most pointless shows I’ve watched and enjoyed.

This. So much this.

Trying Condor again. Like the book. Love the film. The series?

War of the Worlds, the 2019 version. I really enjoyed watching the human race get exterminated. There’s some really grim stuff here, mass deaths of civilian populations, dead children, suicides, you name it. Decent production values for a TV series, and a realistic air to the proceedings. Loved it.

ooo… tell me more lol… what platform?

It’s on Epix. You can get a free 7 day trial on either Amazon Prime or AppleTV.

Or I suppose you could fly your black flag if you felt the need to go that route.

The Outer Limits. There was truly no better series when I was a teen for a heady mix of scifi, horror, and top quality female nudity. I thought I’d seen every episode, but on briefly checking wikipedia, I saw I had missed some and am using that as an excuse to binge the lot.

ZeroZeroZero, on Amazon Prime.

Worldwide narcotics trafficking revolving around the movement of a shipment of cocaine. No names you’ll recognize other than Gabriel Byrne, unless you watch way more foreign cinema than do I. Subtitles required, as it jumps between Italian, French, English, and various African and Arab dialects. High levels of violence and gore for those that are squeamish about that sort of thing.

Very well done cinematography, despite the overuse of a trope which does serve the series well in the end; to go into further detail would spoil it. Definitely recommended - well acted, suspenseful, and left me wanting more.

I should have given Billions a proper chance ages ago. Giamatti has me rapt, knocking out a fantastic performance. Some epic bitterness on display, not to mention spite and hatred. Particularly enjoyed the way everyone knows the stock market is openly corrupt.

Great show, love everything about it. Have yet to see the latest season, as it’s one of the ones the wife and I watch together…

Just finished Norsemen season 3. Hilarious stuff. If you like the dry humor of mocumentaries like What We Do In The Shadows you can’t miss this Vikings spoof.

Lower Decks. At last, a good Star Trek series. Genuinely funny, and feels vaguely transgressive throughout.

Lovecraft Country. A good if unsubtle start. I hope the series has more of a through line than the book, but it has some good acting and production so I’ll be happy regardless.

Teenage Bounty Hunters. Incredibly fun. Excellent chemistry between the two leads sells the whole thing.

Away. Was hoping for more competence porn, like The Martian. Instead, the science is not careful, the characters seem ineffective, often making bafflingly foolish and heavily telegraphed choices, and it’s mostly about the family dramas. Not horrible, but hard to care about.

I tried Another Life and was not gripped, and Away was worse. Disappointing.

Twice Upon a Time on Netflix (or “Il était une seconde fois”, its original French title). Four episode French-language drama focused around limited-window time travel (6 months in this case). Very strong writing, excellent acting all around. Lots of nice subtleties and tension in this with some clever narrative and structural twists.
