The Actual Table

Absolutely correct. Do you prefer DI with three? We had a rather bracing 4-player game that slowed up just at the end. I think four works great but it may not be optimal.

I’ve only played 3.

Dune plays great with four. Done it dozens of times.

Six is fine, too, if you can round them up. And if everyone takes their turns fairly quickly.

Getting pride of place next to Shifting Sands, a miraculously great condition copy from the halcyon year of 2004.

Veilwraith hasn’t left my table in two weeks. Absolutely in love with this game.
Super simple ruleset, loads of depth within that space and the content in the box, 20x the replay value with the absolution expansion’s content.

LOVE RitD! I also have both that and Shifting Sands. Some of these block games are true classics.

Fans of Cat Lady might like this one.

Cat Lady is a really fun quick card game that is perfect for a work lunch or before you get into the meaty games for the evening.

Dog Lover looks like it will be something in the same vein.

Villainous just went over like a lead balloon with my wife. As a card game veteran I don’t find it complicated at all but I think it was a little overwhelming for her. It also became too drawn out where we were both about to win and we kept playing fate cards on the other to hamper that.

I do like how thematic the game can be. She was playing Prince John and I was able to continually steal her money with the fate. I was Jafar and she snatched victory from me a couple times by stealing my magic lamp first with Apu, then with Aladdin.

I ended up winning and it won’t be coming to the table any time again with her, though my kids like it.

I’m going to try to teach her Dice Throne later. She likes Yahtzee do I think she will like it.

Two weeks in a row, I’ve done a BGG Top 300 entry!

#260-251 and #250-241.

Anybody played/like/dislike these games?

Only Small World, which I have only played digitally, but I do like it a lot. I really need to play it more to get any good at it though.

I love Dune Imperium and think it is better than the sum of its parts.

I haven’t played Aeon’s End Legacy but I’ve played the digital port of the base game. I don’t think it is all that original but it is still quite fun. I don’t know that I’d pick it up before other co-op deck builders, but it is worth a look if you like the genre.

Arboretum killed Lost Cities in my house. It gives us the same agonizing decisions with a little more strategy.

SmallWorld annoys me every time I play it but I can’t really say why. I just don’t enjoy it like I feel I should.

Century Spice Road is about as plain and boring a game as you would expect for a game about trading spices. It’s as if Splendor set out to make the most non-thematic mechanic-in-a-box game and Century showed up with the “Hold my beer” meme. Yet I own it and play it because it works well with my kids.

I’ve had Hive for ages and love the concept and components more than I love playing it, though it has been years and I’d like to try and teach my son. I’m not a huge fan of abstract games, so my opinion may be a little clouded. The components are great, and the play anywhere nature of the game can’t be beat. I actually bought the pocket version after I already owned the regular version because some twisted part of my brain convinced my idiot self that a smaller version of an already small game would be better for travel…

Remember what I just said about abstract games? Yeah, Onitama didn’t do it for me. Granted, I only played the app. The game looks nice, but in an all-too-frequent boneheaded decision the developers (this might be Asmodee again, but I would have to check) decided not to have any asynchronous multiplayer. Nonsensical. My opinions of the game may have been different had I been able to play with friends on a regular basis.

I just got my copy of Summoner Wars Second Edition. I’m really excited. I’ll let you know how it is when I can convince my wife to learn it. Don’t hold your breath.

Century Spice Road is boring looking, I admit. But for some reason I enjoy it.

Or I should say I enjoyed it. I haven’t played it in a while and my opinion may change if I do get it played again.

Onitama was an Asmodee app, so it had the same problems. And now it’s gone, for some reason. Not sure why.

Really? They did the same with Splendor.

Yeah, but they actually announced Splendor.

Onitama, it was just “poof”.

When I opened it, it crashed.

I deleted it and was going to re-download it and it was gone!

We played War Room on Saturday, it took all day, and we still didn’t finish.

Is it any good? I backed the 2 edition on kickstarter

It’s enjoyable. It’s not got much in the way of historical value, but it looks like the new battle system will be better. I do think it’s slightly too complex to be the sort of Axis & Allies replacement it wants to be. Very long game, and we were doing timed planning turns. Lots of fun, but not what I’d call cerebral.

I bought a box of draft boosters of the Forgotten Realms Magic set. It just looked cute! I thought, maybe, someday, I could draft or played Sealed with somebody; perhaps my kids, but maybe I’ll make friends.

Fast forward a week, and my kids have fallen into the game hard. We’ve done sealed twice, my daughter’s in the midst of making a deck for constructed, and it’s looking like we’ll finish the box with a draft before school starts (it’s late here). No idea whether this is just a pandemic summer flash-in-the-pan or something that’ll turn into an abiding interest, but it’s been a fun week!

I buy a booster every time I get groceries. I love the set’s theming. The mechanics are neat for the set but the dice rolling is not something I enjoy greatly in Magic. I love the class cards.
